The last time this went though Nebraska was in 1988 during that drought and it darn near wiped out the deer population. They're predicting heavy losses this year too....

Thanks for the link, D-D. I haven't heard of any outbreaks of this here in NY - yet.

We had an outbreak in southeastren Indiana that did take down harvest numbers for several years. They were some of the highest deer population counties also as far as numbers turned in to the DRN as checked in.
The deer herd here seems to be in fine shape. Starting to see some movement in the late evening before sunset on does and a few buck in velvet. I hate seening them in full velvet right now because they racks look huge. I need to check out so mast trees with the drought. The white oaks my brop stuff early and the hickory I do not know if they even produced this year. Oh well tree rat season opens in 2 days.
If it ever get calm and cool i am going walk the earth. Normally I don't get out till the first frost other than scouting from the truck.

Was the deer walking in circles. That was what got reported in when they first found it here in Indiana. A few deer walking in circles in the daytime over and over. They looked much sicker than the buck you shot at. These we skin and bone.

This one couldn't jump a fence was in lala land and came up and was banging his antlers on the car of the guy who called it in. Very little hair left on rear quarters, notice the swelling by the base of each ear. Also blood coming out of one ear. Should get the test results back shortly....

Found 4 more dead ones tonight on my place. One about like the one in the picture w/ taller brow tines. One a 4X4 but twice as thick on the bases and main beams..... One a year and a half old 3X3 the other a Flat top. That makes ten I've found just on my 1/2 mile of creek bottom!! The neighbors are finding them in high numbers to including a huge 5X5 that I had my eye on for this winter...... I'm sure I'll keep finding more till a good frost hits.

It is. We've built the herd up by using food plots, minerals, and selective shooting. We left the does to live because in rut if you have does the bucks WILL come,,, and they did/do. We were careful not to over harvest yet not to have more deer than the land could carry..... Now we will most likely have to start over........

Indiana has 17 reported case and several trail cam photos have shown some others that I thought looked like they were sick. Those photo's have been sent to the DNR aslo.
I must be the dry weather of the fact that we have lots of deer garthering in a small amount of good food plots and the like.

Interest thing is I'm seeing a lot of fawns by themselves. I don't know if the EHD is only taking Does because they're health is weakened by nursing fawns while food is harder than normal to find. And the bucks because of the energy spent growing antlers....... I'm gonna run these theories by the NGPC biologist. We'll see if they agree or not.

found three more dead today on my creek. Including a fawn. There goes that theory.... 14 dead total that I have found just on mine. Aaron was dove hunting the creek bottom and came across a 5X5 laying in the creek that got up when he got about 7 yards away and stumbled off. I'm smell/find it tomorrow I'm sure.... Won't be any deer to hunt on our place if the death rate keeps up!!!! Bounce you might want to line up somewhere else as a plan "B" for Sean....
