Their pretty good shooting guns but they can be a real PITA to find the right load for. Kind of finicky is the word I get about them. The barrels are shorter also. Its like a lot of tactical things. Gimmicks. The make a shorter round barrel in like a 20" that is a pretty good gun and shoots very well from what I have seen. Kid I shoot with and who I worked on his ranges with a couple times is shooting out to 800 pretty easily with his .308 Win and it has the el cheap stock on it and an even cheaper scope.

Ok, this just happened yesterday. One of the guys from the gun counter wanted to go shooting with a few of us that are doing the long range thing. He showed up with a Remington 700 SPS Varmint .243 Win in total stock configuration, and about 50 rounds of ammo loaded with Nosler 95 grain Ballistic tips bullets that one of the guys that came along had loaded for him. He thought we were going to shoot maybe out to 300 and figured he could do that. When Jamie and Dave got in the pickup to go put up a target for him and a 12" steel plate for the rest of us he kind of had a weird look on his face. Jamie put up the target at 200 for him and then drove down the canyon. Tweeter says where is he going?? We just said "Down there" and pointed down the canyon. He just sat and watched as Jamie drove down the canyon till he got to the spot he knew the distance on and stopped. It was 850 yards. When he got back Tweeter asked him how come you put the steel way down there. Jamie's answer was because that is where WE shoot at. The 200 yd target is for the boys. ;D The rest of us of which there were 4 got out our guns and pads and spotting scopes and all lay down in a row prone while Tweeter got out his table and stuff and started banging away at the 200 yd target. Of the guns the rest of us were shooting there was a Rem 700 Sendero II in .264 Win Mag. A Rem 700 Police in .308 Win with the 20" barrel. A Savage 10 in .308 with the heavy fluted barrel and a muzzlebreak. A Savage 12 LRV in 6.5 Creadmore. Oh and a Savage 12 Target action with a 17" barrel and pistol grip stock in .243 Win. It didn't take but a few shots and all you could hear was clang, clang, clang of the bullets hitting the steel. All except for my .264 WM It just blows holes though the 1/2" mile steel. Guess we have to weld it up before we can shoot it again. Tweeter watched for a while and finally Dave put him out of his misery and asked him if he wanted to try it. Answer was I don't think my gun will shoot that far. Well all laughed at that one. ;D ;D Jamie set him up with an extra pad and did some dialing on his scope for him and told him give it a try. About 3 shots latter he hit the steel and from then on it was game on. I bet he shot every round he had with him at that steel and had a ball. So if someone tells you that you a Remington SPS Varmint won't shoot worth a crap their F.O.S. Those guns shoot.

Well it sure isn't hard to do that's for sure. What is hard to to correlate that to hunting. If you don't know the range and the drops your just spinning your wheels. IF you know your drops at least you can plug that into a program such as Sierra 6 and work backwards till you have your drops matching your velocity. You can pick up a rangefinder that will do out to 1000 fairly reasonable. From then on it is just practice practice practice. All of which is fun.

Before I go dog hunting I willl have range and wind taped to the stock of my rifle. We currently have a range set up to 300 yards with a nice bench and we are saving orange golf balls for our 300 yard targets. I figure if I can hit those i will stand a chance against Dick on the dogs. I did get out the other day and shoot a few shots at 300 yards and so far my drop estimates with my handloads are about right on.
I remember when DEW sold his 264 Win Mag because it kept blowing up the coyotes he shot. The 6.5 264 bullets sure fly flat too. I was able to shoot a GC63 Swede target rifle in 6.5X55 one time and I was surprised how well it held up at long range and the 264 should be giving you another 500 fps.

?? the drop of a .243 at 400 yds is around 44" if memory is close 850 yds you would be shooting that thing over the mountain to hit the valley? with the speed of a bb gun

Hell it is faster than my .308 Win and I shoot it out to 1200. He was shooting 95 grain A-Max's with a 7 to 10 MPH wind from about 11:00. Figured about 1/8 Value wind. Don't think the drop was near as bad as you think Bounce. Will have to ask him and find out. One of the other guys that shoots specialty pistols like Ernie (XPHUnter) shoots has a .243 Win and was shooting 107 Burgers from a 17" barrel and he was having no problem hitting the target either. They all shot my .264 WM and all said the same thing. That sure is easier ;D One other kid with a Savage 10 Chaote in .308 Win had never shot past 300 and had no idea what a .308 could do is now shooting 850 and has a grin on his face from ear to ear permanently. If I hadn't of been so tired from working all night and only having 3 hrs sleep (had to do inventory) I would of taken a camera and taken some pictures. This place we were shooting is pretty much any range you want to try. They shoot .50 BMG's out there.

Well I always like the .243 just because it ran out of everything at 500 yds, after that the energy and drop are worthless to hunting and if you not shooting way over the tree tops the bullet is in the dirt. I will give some one credit to dile in that drop as that bullet must be comeing in at close to an 70 degree angle at 850 yds

Huh? Uhmm, well, uh, I never shoot a 6mm beyond 200 yards At night that is, unless I am using something more powerful than a flashlight FWIW-My 6-284 XP-100 (Approximately equal to 243 Win rifle performance) nailed a pd at 1590 yards in less than 10 shots several years ago. Later on that day we shot it at steel at one mile. 115 DTAC's with a MV of a little over 2700 fps has a BC of around .585-Not bad for 6mm ;D Hell it is faster than my .308 Win and I shoot it out to 1200. With a 100 yards zero my 6-284 XP-100 takes 22 MOA for the drop and for a 10 mph full value wind 4.75 MOA at 850 yards. MV of 2725 In a 30-06 rifle using Federal Ammo/150 Ballistic Tip MV=2910. 850 yards Drop=21.50 Drift=6 MOA The 06 rifle has over 10 inches more wind drift-starting off almost 200 fps faster than the equivalent performance of a 243. The drop of my 6mm is about 4.25 inches more than the 06 in this comparison. Drop is not the issue in hunting at distance, drift is. Drop is a constant. Drift is the fly in the ointment. Well I always like the .243 just because it ran out of everything at 500 yds, after that the energy and drop are worthless to hunting and if you not shooting way over the tree tops the bullet is in the dirt.
