I just patterned the Hopkins & Allen !!! WOW!!! I shot a life sized target @ 10, 17, and 25 yards. I would consider this shotgun a turkey killer well past 25 yards!!!!! WHAT A CHOKE!!! At ten yards it could have cut off the head on a real turkey. I emailed Scott photo's of each target as well as the shotgun, they have the yardage marked in the upper left of each target. Look out you turkeys there's a NEW shotgun in town!!!!!

Right now Bounce is over to Two Moons getting his "new" old shotgun back into shooting shape for turkey hunting. It's a cool one too!!! Between the two "new" shotguns them turkeys won't know what hit them !!! Not to mention the smoke from all the Black Powder that will blind them if nothing else!!!

T/M's sent me back home with mine DD and we din't make smoke. Told me to hang it on the wall. He did say the barrel was in good shape but rebuilding the rest was more time consuming than he wanted now. May give me a call back some day, year? He did have some nice toys to show Phill & me That damascus knife is a real dandy and a shoot prize at the spring shoot, I should try to get serious over that for sure. And the 1858 Rem conversion to .45 lc was supper cool along with the .32 Rem pocket revolver. How ever he is fixing me a new Turkey gun too....smiles. M1873 or "hammer lifter model" used a lever on the tang that lifted up to open the barrels and draw the hammers back to half cock. The lockplate had 3 screws at the rear, made in 10 & 12 gauges.
Bounce... According to my book yours is an early first model 1873 shotgun. The book shows the hammer shapes for each gun and yours is the early recessed. This would make the gun between 1873 and 1876. Now the good news. I replaced the hinge pin and brought the lockup back to dead tight. I also re soldered the rib after spending 1/2 a dau cleaning and clamping it in a jig. The gun IS un cut and the barrel is suppose to be 28 " which is just what it measures. The chokes are LONG they start at least 3" down the bore and are a steady taper. The gun should shoot at least modified choke and probably full, that's unusual as your gun was made right at the start of chokes and they still were wary of choking a shotgun here. I am some proud of the action as I had to turn a new hinge pin 5 thou larger than the original and then ream the action and then refit all the parts including the fore end iron, but WOW it snaps dead tight on face and it won't close on a tissue paper. You actually have to give the lifter a little push to snap it over. I did take pictures and will be sening them in for posting as this is one neat gun now and it's 2-4 years EARLIER than DD's H and A.

Looks like I can barow my shells from DD this year. As that Reminton probibly should have 2-1/2" shells given it's age? Game was alot easyer to kill in the old days as they did not need 3-1/2" shells, They also may not have had so many gun writers wtriting for gun & ammo companys?

Just decided to get two of the guns down that I could use turkey hunting and check the choke dia at the end. The 40" barrel on the Zulu is .71 and on the Long Tom 40" barrel that only says choke bored is .68 I don't recall ever checking the one over at T/M's the 28" SXS Remintion. Have a real nice muzzelloader bubble 12 ga thats ready for the task allso if I wanted. But so far am thinking old time shell guns this year?
