I just submitted an order into DIXIE and I should be getting my new baby by the end of the week. So after months of deciding on what handgun to get...I got the Great Granddaddy of them all Uberti Colt Walker I about pooped my shorts when I saw their sale price of $295 because it hasn't been that cheap in 10 years !!! It was kinda a impulse purchase because I know they will eventually sell out at that price (though it didn't say how many they had). They had at least one I'm a little worried because I'm 5'9'' and have small girlish hands. and the holster is literally going to be down below my knees on this massive gun. I've also never had a fixed sight gun before and am a little worried about it's point of aim. Worse comes to worse, I could probably sell it for what I paid. Probably not the most practicle choice to carry deer hunting but I know I won't be undergunned when it blasts out 60 grains of powder. Even if I miss, it will probably temporarily blind or deafen the deer where I can run up and kill it ;D ;D ;D Most probably know that I research guns very in depth before making a buy and I haven't been wrong in 5 years (but I should of known better than to buy a ruger and all). I am nervous about this one though. Regardless, it would be a freaking sweet paper weight ;D ;D ;D

;D ;D He will get one shot and the gun will lock up. Some good advise for you Red. Use a rubber band to keep the loading lever up against the barrel. It does not have a latch to hold it up and if it drops down it will lock the cylinder in place.

Hardest part to get use to with that new gun will be keeping the barrel out of the mud Won't even need a rifle during ML season, just shoot the Walker. I think they call that field artillery don't they

The later Walkers had a rammer latch like the dragoon for this very reason. I know a fellow who uses his for deer with a 220 bullet and 50 grains of FFFg. Red, figure out which is your short leg and sling it on that side!

You know - just looking at the Josey Wales pics, I'm getting a better feeling about the purchase. It should be very fun and intimidating to show off.
I've got a few things in mind as far as the holster goes.
1. I could get a snap holster strong side but like I said --- pretty darn long
2. I could get a flap style with a long belt and wear it like a bandalaroo accross my chest like a sling
3. Or I can just stick in my belt with no holster - crossdraw style
I've got a few options and I'll have to wait and see how big this thing is. I've only seen it once a few months ago and never have held one.
On a side note, since there seems to be a lot of walker owners here. Does anyone make a shoulder stock for the revolver? I see some made for the Dragoons but so far no walker.
As Bill said, you could probably get away with it as a primary gun under 50 yards with a stock.
As far as keeping the loading lever down, I was thinking a strip of velcro. Rubber band could actually melt in the extreme heat I would think.

I bought my holster years before the gun as a man in bussness with T/M;s in center was selling out I bought a flap style for $5 new Caryed a 1860 army in it for years, Kinda had to dig it out to use the gun though!! as it was over sized. With a gun this big I am very happy with this flap style though and wish for no other, Yes I have carried it over my shoulder quite offten. And Rubber band works for no hoter than I get mine but only use one when I want to be dam shure it don't fall as so far mine stays up pretty good just not allways. Finaly got my walker a few years ago when T/M's had a auction in Bloomfield before moveing to a new shop at his home. As good as new $70 No way I was passing up that one, but shure T/M's wishes I had as it would have ben a no sale I think? LOL

Congrats, PBR, that looks like fun! I think there may be some legal issues with a shoulder stock on a handgun- but maybe not on a BP. Better do some research, though.

Naw, it's blackpowder
You can even buy a conversion cylinder and shoot factory 45lc cartridges without a ffl

Red Originaly these were holster pistols and the holster was on the horse! They were what was called pommel holsters and a pair of them hung from the saddle. If you are going to carry this on YOU you will probably want some type of olster that hangs off the shoulder as this gun will weigh as much as a small rifle wen loader. Fully Loaded right at 4 pounds if I remember right. I would go with a flap hlster and a belt across the shoulder. Dixie makes the flap holster for this one and they aren't much, say $20 bucks. If you are shoting for fun stick with the B/P as you can cram more in a cylinde rthan a 45 case and it is impressive when it roars. There is no problems with a shoulder stock legaly as this is not a ctg gun. They don't make one for the Walker as they were never used but a few simpl mods and you could use an 1860 stock. The bad news is that the shoulder stocks cost as much as the gun. Unless you can pick up a used one you are looking at $250. With a 9" barrel and a stock that gun should be good for deer to 75 yards or more.

4 1/2 pounds unloaded You know, I almost bought that flap holster last night. But like I said, it was a impulse purchase and I just wasn't ready. I think I'm going to end up doing that though in a couple weeks. Also thought about an uncle mike's shoulder holster...not leather though... I'm not interested this year in getting a shoulder stock, but for future references do you think simple modifications require a gunsmith or is it a DIY once you know what the plan is? and the Dragoon stock may be the better choice than the 1860 Does it require work to the gun or to the stock?

Not shure on the modifacation Red but it maybe just a notch in the bottom grip strap? As mine does not have one and I know a 1860 Army does

If you want to keep yourself out of trouble with the ATF guys then do not make the conversion to a cartridge gun. Basically its kind of illegal as it then becomes a handgun without a serial # that has been registered when you bought the gun. And if you put a butt stock on it after the conversion then it becomes a rifle with too short of a barrel. Careful what you dream of. It might jump up to bite you.
