I'm picking it up tomorrow
30-06 It's a BDL high grade model from the 70's in really really good shape. Suppost to been shot only 50-100 times.
I felt like I couldn't pass it up for $350
Does anyone have experience with these guns? Do they tend to like the standard power point type ammo. I'm going to probably just buy a box of 150's unless it happens to shoot the 1/2 box of 180gr round nose corelocks that are comming with the gun.

Red i hope that rifle treats ya well. some do and a lot don't, but with your distaste for non functioning semi autos i can see a serious venting post down the line should this one mess with ya. i do have friends that have used them with little issue but they do take care of them and understand the issues.

Say what you want I can only remember fixing the dust coves on them, the new plastic ones break but nothing else does. I had ONE in with the barrel and action buldged. A doofus shot a 308 in a 270 chambered gun. New receiver and barrel and it was back in action.

Well I have it ;D It's in VERY VERY nice shape. No rust or pits at all. The wood has a few "oops marks" on it as expected but is in overall very good shape for it's age. Much heavier than I expected. The forarm is very wide and flat like a benchrest target gun. It feels like my 870 when shouldering it - it doesn't fit quite right (only the bottom 1/3 of the butt sits on my shoulder - otherwise it rides high). Overall, it's certainly worth $350. I could dump it for what I paid easy. Good solid looking gun - not sure of my plans for it. I'll probably put the iron sights back on and shoot it like that for a while. Though if I can find a 1.5x4.5x32 Bushnell 3200 on clearance I might grab that! Here's some pictures. His camera did a better job than mine. www.missouriwhitetails.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=155496

Nice looking rifle, Red. That's a common deer rifle here in the East, except for Penciltucky. Autoloaders aren't legal in PA, for hunting. They often shoot quite well. When you encounter problems with the Remmy autos, it's usually one of 2 things: dirt/rust in the chamber, making extraction difficult (hence my earlier advice), or bad reloads. No reason you can't reload for the rifle, but, you have to take account for the differences between an auto and a bolt gun. Autos don't have the power when chambering a cartridge that a bolt rifle can have. Handloads need to be full length sized, and sometimes small base dies are needed. I assume you won't be reloading for it, Red, so that doesn't matter. Since that rifle was designed before Hornady came out with the Light Magnum ammo, I'd stick with regular, run of the mill ammo from about anybody, and, keep the rifle clean, it should do very well for you.

As I keep shouldering this thing, the more of a problem I think I might have. The gun wants to rest in the palm of my hand right where the magazine is. So I'm not sure if the upward pressure on the front 1/2 of the magazine will cause some feeding problems. We'll just have to see I guess.

Red,
You are going to like it. I think the bdl has the raised cheek piece and a basket weave type checkering.
Get this my cousin is left handed. In 1987 he wanted a rifle he could shoot as a lefty. (he was using a rem 788 in 22-250 right handed shooting left handed.) At a gunshow dad found a 742 bdl left handed in 6mm rem for like 150 dollars and bought it to sell to him. With it was 4 boxes of 6mm core lok rem loads. He has shot groundhogs, deer, hogs, coyotes, crows, and even a couple of ground/barn dwelling raccons with that gun.
He has only used core loks with it and he is not a fussy person when it comes to cleaning stuff. I think you will be fine. I would stick with shooting the cor lock bullets in it.

This gets better...you're going to like this. The box of ammo that came with the gun is said to be factory 180gr ammo and I thought it was. Then I look closer at the box and see someone turned 150gr into 180gr with a ballpoint pen. So I don't know if he threw away the 180gr box or if these are reloads or what the heck it is. ok, so before I find out the hard way since my hand is so close. The bolt release button located on the magazine - does that slide back and forth each time the gun is shot or only when you are closing the bolt from the locked open position? As you can see in the picture above, my hand is awefull close and likely to get pinched if that slide is moving on each shot.

Don't worry about the lever, keep it clean it will shoot forever if you do. Also keep some lube on the bolt where it locks into the barrel. Wear that out and the gun is worth about $1.50 as scrape iron.

Rem oil or Dry lube work ok? Before going too crazy buying another scope, I just slapped this old cheapy 6x18x50 on there since it was the only spare I have. So long as the accuracy and function are ok, I'll switch that out to something more reasonable. This thing has to weigh over 10 pounds ;D
