I just got back from Gander Mountain, I picked up some Federal Spitfire's.. they're 1500 fps, 31gr, copper plated, hollow points for $3.99/500. Am I missing something or did I buy crap?

Oh yeah, I got the cartridges to go in this: Gander Mountain had them on sale for $300. It's a Remington 597 vtr. I had a Tasco red dot scope I put on top. Now all I have to do is find time during the day that I can go try to sight it in.

3.99 per 500 is a steal if they go off.

3.99 per 500 is a steal if they go off. Yeah, and if they don't spit as much gas, unburned powder, and other trash back at you as goes down the barrel! Usually I am not one who subscribes to the "it's got to be better if you pay more for it" philosophy but, in this case (and since they are Federals), I personally would be a little skeptical.

You can't go wrong on that price. I have never found the hyper velocity rimfires to be particularly accurate in any of my rifles. But at that price they shouldshoot "minute of tomato can" every time!!

Probably because the typical 1-16 twist is geared to 40 grains and 1100 fps.

I think there's an error somewhere I'm better it's either 3.99 for 50 OR 13.99 for 500

I used to ride my bike to the local hardware store (Ace Hardware) in Pendleton. I think I was paying 70-90 cents a box of 50 then in the 1970's. I remember 7 1/2 shot 20 gauge was about 2 bucks or 3 and my #4's were 3.55 a box. I don;t ever remember having to show ID cause I did not have one, It was a good 4 mile bike ride into town. These were not great prices but the hardware store always had them in stock and the bait shop only had ammo in the fall.
A 16 oz glass bottle of Mountain Dew with the cap. A dozen minnows and a 36 count of red worms. A box of 22 shells. A Clark bar. Were staples of need for a morning of fishing. I used to rife to the bait shop on my bike the afternoon before a fishing trip. Minnow water spilled everywhere riding home. Then dad dropping me off at dawn to the little falls on Fall Creek above the reservoir and him picking me up after work.

Ah yes small town life!! When you did not need an ID cause everyone knew you. And if you pulled any shenanigans your parents knew about it before you could get home.

Red.. no error... $3.99 for 500 rounds. I looked at the box again after you said something and that's what's stamped on the box. I'll take a pic of the box later to show you.

Bill, Bounce, DD Remember buying them by the handful in the hardware store? He would have a bin of them and you could buy as many as you could afford 1 or 20. That was a hardware store! My first 22's were 25 cents a box if I remember right. I do remember buying a hunting license for $1.25

Gander's computers have made some kind of pricing error and the idiot who put the sticker on the box wasn't doing his job. ;D
These things are apparently a Gander Mountain exclusive and the regular price for them is $9.99 per 50.
It's going to be hard to buy them all because 1. They likely fixed the problem 2. Someone else bought them all already 3. You're going to have a hard time (impossible time) getting a manager to approve the sale of a mass quanity of them because a store does have the right to correct pricing mistakes. Just because an employee put the label on the box and it's in the computer doesn't mean you're legally entitled to them at that price.
You could go "all or nothing" or "take what you can get until you get caught". Personally, I'd go back in and buy 5 boxes at a time going to a different cashier each time. 2500 rounds is better than none but not as good 10,000. But that's a choice you're going to have to make if they have them.
I'd want more just to resell, not to shoot. Rarely will these hyper velocity rounds shoot any time of acceptable group in my experience with 3-4 brands I've tried in the past. Yeah, that's cheap shooting but I want more than 6" groups at 50 yards. Might be ok for a handgun if you have access to targets under 25 yards.
