I was just looking over the dove seasons and bag limits for the upcoming season here in Virginia and noticed that the daily bag limit had been increased from 12 birds per day to 15. It's been 12 birds per day here since I was a kid (and I won't admit how long ago that's been). Is this something unique to Virginia or has the daily bag limit been increased in your state too?

This year in Missouri it's 12 a day with a possession limit of 24. I think that's been the limit for quite a while. I've only hunted doves one or two times so I don't know for sure.

Don't know, but it's more than I ever got in a day!

Jack: You have my sympathy! I don't believe I would do too well in N.Y. anyway but no dove hunting would be the icing on the cake. bounce: I usually have enough problems getting the old limit of 12. I guess I'll just have to work a lot harder now with the higher limit of 15.

From what I understand in Missouri, the birds are either there or they're not. You either get your 12 birds rather easily or you're lucky to kill one or two.
Most people know in advance whether or not they're even going to bother hunting.

hitting doves is A LOT harder than it looks sometimes. Especially after they have been shot at a little.
I have been cocky because I was 11 for 15 then gone on a 0 fer 64 run. Then followed up with 9 of 11. (This is on multiple days...)

limit is 0 here too. Everytime the DNR sets a season the bird lovers get an injuction to stop it and their protected as a Songbird. Funny you can shoot all the piedgeons you want? Shame there no season on Bird lovers!

I heard that at any time... there are like 285 MILLION mourning doves in North America. that they have an 85% mortality rate, and that humans only kill about 2 million of them a year.
That means that 242,250,000 doves die every year and we only get 2,000,000 of them. \
That's .8% of the mortality rate attributable to hunting.
Hey Jim... you want to come to Indiana to shoot doves?
(no you don't, I don't have any GOOD places).

jimiowa:
I can see a state like N.Y. banning dove hunting (no offense Jack) but I am surprised at a state like Iowa. Of course Virginia is f'uped too because we can't hunt on Sundays. However, given the choice between hunting on Sundays and hunting doves the other 6 days of the week, I guess we do have the lesser of evils here in the Old Dominion.

I wish more of the old not on sundays still exsisted, It did slow things down abit from today, Though hunting is not one we ever had or would want. But if the dug store was open for two hours in the morning and wallmart was closed this would be fine with me + a open gas station. We all should take a breake one day and hunting is takeing a breake as is all recreational sports.

It's all about PERSONAL choice. If you want to take a break on Sundays... go right ahead. A Lot of people do not. sometimes I do, sometimes I do not. I like it being MY choice.
Not hunting on Sundays is whacked. It's like not buying alcohol on Sundays? WTF is THAT about? There is a push in Indiana RIGHT NOW to get that one repealed.

On edit...
You can't buy a car on Sundays in Indiana either. Another stupidity IMO.

I have to agree Bounce! Back in the 50's and 60's when stores were not open people planned ahead and got what they needed on Saturday. My folks were pretty religious and would buy nothing on Sunday,if they did not plan ahead they did without.
There is one Grocery Chain here in Iowa(Iowa Based) Fareway that closes Sunday. They have a sign in the store that says" Our employee's work hard 6 days a week. They deserve one day a week to spend with their families. We will be closed Sundays so they can be rested and prepared to work and serve our customers the other 6 days a week. Thank You for your patronage and understanding."
I respect that and they get as much of my business as I can send their way. I also like them because they have an Old Fashioned meat counter where you can point out the cuts you want or they will custom cut their meats to your specifications. The other two stores in Newton don't even have meat cutters in the store, they have stockers that stock the shelves with prepackaged meats. It's always a mystery as to what kind of scraps you will find buried in that package!

12 here in Delaware too. It's been like that since I got here in 1970... and probably before that too. We don't have any Sunday hunting either. We had a bill up in the Legislature a couple years ago to allow Sunday hunting on private property but like the Iowans, the "tree huggers" got involved and shot that down.
