I shoot, compete, and hunt with specialty handguns, especially XP-100's. I also enjoy shooting these rigs at long ranges. Anybody else here like them?

Howdy xphunter, welcome to Hunting Firearms. We're just startin' up here so check back often for some new members who are into long-range handgunning.

klsm54, Will do. FWIW there are several IBS 1,000 yard ranges that allow Specialty Handguns to compete. One range has their own handgun class and the other range (actually both ranges) allows you to shoot your pistols in both the light gun and heavy gun class. Plan to do some PD shooting out to and beyond 1,000 yard sin October.

That is "serious" long range handgunning, xph. What caliber is your XP in?

XP's: 250 Savage AI (sporter barrel-hunting set-up). 6mm-284 (17" Broughton SS heavy sporter taper, tight-neck chamber, LR hunting, varminting and hunting rig). 6.5-284 (17" Krieger barrel, rear-grip {Can convert it back to center-grip}, tight neck chamber, Vais brake), 7.82 Patriot (Shilen SS 15.75 inch sporter barrel, tight neck chamber, Vais brake, big game mtn rig). Other Types: A 17" 6.5-284 MOA Maximum (Plus a 14 inch 260 Rem & a 14 inch 22-250AI barrels). A 6.5x57R Thor (14" barrel). I do hunt with revolvers some but prefer the specialty handguns. I don't own a centerfire rifle and don't intend to. Here is a pic of the MOA Maximum in 6.5-284 and the rear-grip 6.5-284 XP @ Pella, Iowa where my daughter and I shot @ 1,000 yard match. The small pic of me standing with the yellow stocked XP is the same barreled action in the center-grip configuration.

Those are some serious long range handguns. With an arsenal like that, I can see why you don't plan on getting a rifle. I have shot a few deer with revolvers, but have never caught the long range bug. I fired a friends Lone Eagle in 30-06 a few times and wasn't thrilled with it's bite, nor it's bark for that matter... ;D Looks like you are prepared for it, no matter what the game, or the distance....

klsm54, Most of these SP's can shoot sub 2 inch 3-shot groups at 500 yards. It is amazing how accurate a specialty handgun can be. When you get into the 284/30-06 class cartridge or above a brake is a good option for most folks with bullet weights at and above 140 grain or so. Especially if you have a sporter weight barrel. I prefer the removeable brake for ease of cleaning and the choice of shooting non-braked. FWIW--The 7.82 Patriot Lazz cartridge even in a sporter barrel (180 grain bullet @ 2785 fps) still kicks noticeable less than the 7.5 inch Mag-Na-Ported FA 454 Casuall with max 300 loads (1775 fps).

I don't think its a long range gun, but I've always wanted a Dakota Arms 45-70 wheelgun.

deputydon, That sounds like a fun gun to shoot. I have put about 15 rounds through a 45-70 iron-sighted revolver several years ago, but I am unsure who made it. It was a lot of fun and quite accurate with the guys own reloads. I used to own a FA 454 Casuall and I put a bunch of rounds through it, but 40 rounds was all I could take with max loads (300 gr. Hornady XTP's @ 1775 fps) at one sitting.

I too have shot a 454 Casual. I think the 45-70 would be tamer although I haven't shot one.

You are correct, in at least my experience. My FA 454 had a scope and was mag-na-ported and with it's max loads was more severe than the 45-70 I shot. But there is also the possibility if that 45-70 was loaded warmer it may have been the other way around or about the same. Guess we need to hear from someone that has a BFR or the one you mentioned.
