I had another old 22 come in today that a fellow had in a shop for over 6 month waiting for a small plunger so the GNSMITH could put the gun together. The part is for a HighStandard 22 rifle that was made in 1963-67 and the part is out of stock. So far so good, but looking in the book the part is simple to make and a 1/2 hour on the lathe and a few file strokes and the part was done. Now the other gunsmith??? couldn't do this??? What exactly are they teaching them these days? If you can't order the part and slip it in you can't fix the problem? Just like the MACHINISTS who can't run a lathe unless it's CNC and pre programed. I can tell you right now if computers ever died off some folks couldn't wipe themselves. Heck when I started i had to prove I could make a part with nothing but a drawing and a file before I was even allowed to touch a machine. I had a fellow in here who had been to Trinidad and I was teaching him to harden parts with a torch, he couldn't do this unless he had a temp controlled furnace and a quenching tank. It seems no one is taught to actually use hand tools anymore, a crying shame.

hate to say it twomoons but you're a dieing breed. there are a couple of legit gunsmiths/machinest in the st louis area but they are dwindling off fast. what ones that are still around are booked solid for a year with work.

My smith revolver guy is backed up 6 months. I got a model 19 with a timing problem for a song after it shaved a bit of lead onto the guys hand shooting it. I still have a bit of a problem with revolver timimg. He like twomoons charges what I consider less than fair fee, Since he does not do the internet at all I am safe to say if he chaged me twice the price he does I would still find it more than reasonable. After the fix i will have under 300 in the model 19. Mt 1911 guy is not as busy, but his son started making 1911's in fort wayne Indiana. They are tight for a 1911 and shoot very accurate and seem to feed SWC and hollowpoints very well. The stainless starts at 1399.00 MSRP so I could get a Kimber grand raptor for that price. My price is much less.

I suspect you are a dying breed, Twomoons. There are 4 or 5 gun shops in the area I live in, but only one (that I know of) has a real gunsmith. Fortunately, he's a good one. The rest change parts, but, heck, I can do that.
