I did get to two moons to get my new Buggy Rifle, Also got to see your beauty in .45 DD, are you falling back to your old self 35 years ago? Or you just don't want your daughter useing your good stuff? lol. Last time I was their T/M's had a Remington .22 model 514 well used said it had belonged to bill many years ago, So I figured it had way more use than it LQQKED by 10 lol. This time he had a realy great looking Remington 514, I said you did one heck of a job on that rifle, T/M's says oh this is a differant one, same price so I brought it home too. After ajusting the sight down to the 3rd notch in stead of the top one, were I found it I could dust all the dandylions fur balls I could find all day long, just din't have very many in that stage. LOL. I still have a weekness for single shot .22's Nice gun & glad to have it.

My Grandpa use to have a couple saying that may prove apt here... You can't polish a turd and you can groom a mule but you can't make him a horse. DD's gun is somewhere in between those two. First off what DD thought was grain tuened out to be burn marks from a dull cutting tool and after initial sanding the stock has all the character of a desk top. The CVA kit I am starting with had been dinked with and had two sheet metal screws holding in the barrel. The stock was the typical two piece and the loock had no bridle. Given my drutheres I would scrap the stock the lock and the furniture and screws and thow away the rest,but...
Here's how we are going to make a usable wallet from a pigs extremity... Fiirst I scrapped the brass spacer plate and made the mismatched stock into a one piece stock with acra glass and dowells. Then I reshaped the stock comb so you can get down on the sights and I replaced the front sight with a silver blade. I threw away the cheezy nose cap and shortended and recrowned the barrel. I then filled the screw holes in the stock and dovetailed the barrel and put in pins to hold the stock in place. I will then artifically stripe the stock and blend in the joint so it loooks like another stripe in the stock. The misplaced ram rod thimbles will have to stay as they are unless I can find another thimble in my junk box. The barrel will be draw filed and browned to remove the writing. The brass screws were trashed and replaced with the proper steel screws. I will have to make new siide plate bolts and I really should inlet a sideplate to make it look right.
Now for the bottom line... It costs JUST AS MUCH to work on a Stevens as a Purdy if you do it right. I will have as many hours in this CVA kit as I would have if I had started with good stuff from the git go. I figure at the price I quoted DD for the job I will be getting $1.50 an hour. I have no idea what he gave for the kit but at say $10.00 and hour labor and $15 machine time, 1/2 my normal shop rate I so far have $150 in the job and still have two days to go.
I wouldn't do this for DD but for his daughter, well...

Well the striping covered the joint nicely and you can't see where the two piece stock came together. The barrel is in the cabinet for a rust brown and the brass is being polished. The gun now has a brass side plate and a third ramrod thimble so it doesn't look much like a CVA. I have a nice set of single set triggers but since this is for a kid I think a regular trigger untill she gets some expirience. With luck the gun should go together tuesday.
