I'm thinking about a new breed to add to my kennel. I loved my German Wirehaired Pointer Lisa!!!!! Without a doubt the BEST birddog/housedog I have ever owned !! But I'd like to try a differant breed. So after thinking it over I'm leaning towards a Llewellin Setter. Have any of you ever been around one ? Or do any of you have any personal knowledge of these dogs ? I'm wanting to know before I leap that this is a worth while breed to try........... www.nalba.org/llewellin_setters.htm

I grew up in a house that always had an English Setter bird dog. They made great house dogs as well as excellent bird dogs. The article you posted stresses Field Dog Stud Book, and that's important - FDSB is where bird dogs get registered. I've seen a few AKC registered English Setters, and they sorta look like a bird dog, but that's as close as they get to being a bird dog, IMO.

The Setters are nice. I have not been around many English Setters. But at one time the Irish setter was very popular in this area. My only objection to a long haired dog is in this area the briars and brambles can make for a grooming nightmare. That was also a problem to a lesser degree with my favorite breed of bird dog, the Brittany Spaniel. A breed I am interested in is the Hungarian Vizla.

long hair... yuk.
I knew a llewelyn setter once. He was real soft...and easy to get a long with.
He didn'e have enough drive to suit me... that's why I like the GSP's. GO go go go go .

Vizla's can be a handful. I am also with Jabba on the long hair. We clip our Springer a few times a year. The last time before winter was last month. Need a shorter coat for hunting or she will bring back every burr in the woods.
Panda is go go go dog too. When people see her energy level they think she is about 3. I tell them she is 9 going on 2. One thing she has learned to do is to pace herself. She hunts hard but then settles down when we get back to camp....a little.

I have a friend @ Bazile Mills who is getting a 10 month old female Llewellin Setter from North Dakota. so I'll get to hunt over one before I decide to buy one or not.....
