When I speak of better accuracy I am talking reduced loads. I had a Remington M722 in 222 and that gun NEVER shot a group at 100 yards over 1/2" from the bench. I had a 6x Weaver on it and it was absolutly deadly on everything I shot. But drop down to 4 grains of Unique or 8 grains of 2400 and the Hornet would beat it. My best hornet was a Ruger #3 and after I bedded it and got rid of the barrel band it was a real shooter. I used it mostly for small game and coons and with full loads the occasional coyote. Then I got the idea bigger was better and got a 220 Swift from Bill.

Did we find out why the 45 LC barrel is not available. Lack of interest. Slow sales or Remington/bushmaster buyout?
Get the hornet barrel before it is not available.

That's a beauty, Jim. Just for nostalgia, if I were spending someone else's money for a Hornet, I think I'd get a Winchester Low Wall single shot.

Regarding the .45 Colt barrel, go to the H&R1871 web site and check it out for yourself. The accessory barrel program link says specifically that the .45 barrel is no longer available. I guess the "why" really doesn't matter. Regarding the continued availability of the Hornet barrel, I was thinking the same thing myself. I would have already ordered it and the .38/.357 barrel too, but there's just one little problem: you have to send them your receiver and forend. Right now if I am to be able to continue to hunt groundhogs I sort of need the receiver and forend attached to the barrel I already have.

I've got to ask a stupid question. HR wants you to send your gun in to be fitted for barrels. Obvouisly it's for headspace purposes, but why A gun designed to swap out barrels like this surely doesn't need to be sent to the factory every time you buy a barrel. What if you have a 223 barrel on and you already bought a 30-06 from them. You have to take it to a gunsmith each time you change barrels? Forgive my ignorance, but I don't see a single reason why you can't find a 45lc used on the internet !!!

red i tried to put a barrel on my handi rifle that was not fitted from the factory, let me tell you first hand, it needs to be fitted at the factory. it has to do with the locking lug, mine would not lock up all the way. that is the part that has to be fitted and adjusted.

Theheadspace is directly relative to where the chamber end of the barrel fits against the breach of the action and the pivot pin on the barre lug. Production standards of + or - a number of thousands means you could have a case of the barrel not shutting at all or excessive headspace. That's too close to my face to take foolish chances!! Have you ever got hold of an old single shot shotgun where you could wiggle the barrel back & forth when it was locked up? I have seen many. I've also seen good gunsmiths braze weld the lugs and file them to fit. It only makes sense to let the factory do it when they likely charge less than most competent gunsmiths can locally.

Ok, another stupid question.
Let say you wanted to buy 5 barrels. Can you send in the gun, buy the 5 barrels, have Marlin fit them all, and then be able to interchange them?

Yes you can. I guess.
Buy the thompson contender version.and switch between 75 calibers and unlimited barrel lengths and etc.

Ok, another stupid question. Let say you wanted to buy 5 barrels. Can you send in the gun, buy the 5 barrels, have Marlin fit them all, and then be able to interchange them? Once the factory fits the barrel(s) to your receiver you can interchange them at will. That's the whole idea of the accessory barrel program. Jmarriott is probably right in that you can buy to the TC barrels and hook them right up to your receiver without any gunsmithing. However I believe I heard you (Red) say once before you thought the TCs were ugly. I think they are and overpriced (at least for me) at any rate. You could probably buy your 5 NEF barrels and pay to have them fitted at the factory for what one TC barrel would cost.

I don't have a problem with the T/C except for the stocks (well...and price). I don't like the looks of the factory stocks and the aftermarket thumbholes are even worse. I'd go with the NEF/Marlin/HR even with the added inconvience. You could buy a Handi-rifle, ship it back, and get 3 more barrels for the price of 1 Encore. I don't think the numbers are too far off

I am just a T'C fan. Even the factory barrels shoot real well. pistol/shotgun/rimfire/muzzleloader.
As far as the stock's go I like them also. MMg machine make nice barrels at 245 each. Custom shop barrel at that. I have lots of barrels but always want a few more. They used to cost 125 each for the factory pistol barrels. and 149 each for the rifle but those prices are long gone now. I will admit that a couple of my pistol round barrels have a weird forcing cone setup that the custom ones don't. You can tell the difference in the custom ones downrange.
