I seem to have competely different experiences than most here when it comes to wounded squirrels and 22lr. And it likely is that I'm not as good of a shot as most others. You guys aim either for the head or ribcage. Unless I'm solid steady, I'm aiming at the front half of a squirrel. For example look again at the last picture --- the one with his arm hanging on by a string That shot is low in the shoulder. With a 22lr solid, there is very little doubt in my mind / experience --- he would of got away.

I like the .22 WMR myself. I like the idea of the .17 though.
They are more $$ to shoot are they not?

They are a little bit more expensive than your standard 22mag. Now the 22mag v-max is probably going to be every bit as costly as the hmr.
The regular price is about $13 per 50 for the v-max (the hmr's bread and butter ammo) but everyone seems to wait until they go on sale for $9.99 or $10.99

I have both & like both but to me allso is this, nothing get's it done better and is more fun than the .17 HMR But my .22WMR is a marlin lever matic and I find it fun too. The 17 is scoped and the .22 is not

I still think the HMR is a bit overgun for tree rats. The 17 machII seems more my style.
Still I have a 22 lr and a 22 mag so I don't think I will be getting one soon.

The reviews have been pretty good regarding the machII and squirrels. Seems when you lessen the velocity of the 17 v-max the damage is much less. But it's still way faster and more accurate than a 22lr.

If you live where the squirrels are tough, you can still get by with a 22LR.........
It'll help out if you don't shoot so well either........ ;D ;D

Jack said "Wow! 4 banana clips without a single jam!" in reference to the video klsm54 posted showing some yahoo hosing down the countryside using a (fully automatic???) 10-22. I remember getting (I think it was) a RAMLINE banana clip for my son's 10-22 right after we first got if for him. I seem to recollect that we couldn't shoot over 4-5 times without a jam. Maybe that particular banana clip was just a POS. However, I don't recall his gun ever jamming the factory, 10-shot rotary magazine.

Dovehunter, a long time ago I ran the sporting goods section of one of the big box stores. We sold 10/22's by the pallet load- literally- I'd order the number of pallets of them I wanted. When a customer came back complaining that his 10/22 jammed, I learned to ask what magazine he was using. EVERY time, the answer was some after market banana clip. I don't believe I ever has someone complain of jams with a Ruger magazine. Once I convinced the customer to get rid of the crappy banana clip and use factory mags, problem solved- every single time.

Yeah, but they need 30 rounds. How on earth are you going to hit whatever it is you're trying to with only 10

Hey the 22lr is just fineand near prefect for tree rats.
Sighted in with a decent scope at 35 yards you are only 1/5 of an inch high at 20 yards and 1/5 an inch low at 50 yards. I can deal with a 1/5 of an inch on a rat head. You are not going to get that from a 17 machII or HMR or the 22 mag. I don't think you could say that most of your shots are over 50 yards. This is kind of unique in the firearms world and I believe this is with high rings and scopes only.
Most of my shot are well under 50 yards. If you can't sneak in on a tree rat within 50 yards use a call and let them come to you.
Each of the CZ luz models i have seen were fine, I just don't like the euro stocks on them. I hear my father saying he wants the International version in 22 LR and I believe he will have it before spring gets here.

Boy Red, that little .17 really does a job on tree rats... I hope it will do the same on groundhogs... nice shooting!
