Be honest
22lr
Fairly rural landscape - few farms and houses. Basically the same conservation areas many of us hunt on.

This is the norm for the shots I usually get. I take them all the time and don't give it a second thought. Here again, as the initial criteria stated, it's an extremely rural area with almost no houses (or anything else for that matter) around.
jimiowa: Even if you don't miss it's likely that the bullet, even a hollow point, will go all the way through the squirrel. I don't recall ever having recovered a .22 bullet inside a squirrel despite all the hundreds of them I have cleaned over the years.

Don, are you opening or saving? You should "open" or "open from current location" It pops up in another window on a image viewer (I forget the name of the program). Unless their is a problem with your computer Pop up blocker isn't on is it? I don't think that would matter but worth mentioning

i agree dovehunter but once said bulet has hit, expanded and then gone through the squirrel it's ability to travel great distances and not tumble is reduced. that doesn't make it safe mind you but does take away or reduce it's ability to be able to penetrate deeply again down range.

Your Right Dovehunter, it probably will go through, but will upset enough it is not likely to go far. I normally hunt River & Creek Bottoms for our Iowa Fox Squirrels(you have to get into dense forrests to find Grays in Iowa) so am usually shooting down from a ridge or up towards the ridge and a bullet is not likely to travel far before going to ground. In Iowa any ground you can stand on is Row Crop farmed. the only habitat is either hills or marsh though deer do well in field waterways that run into creek and river bottoms. It is a concern to be sure, which is one of the reasons I have been loading very light frangible bullets 40 gr Win Hollow points in reduced loads Velocity between 22 LR & 22 Mag for the Hornet on Squirrel. They move fact enough to MASH and will not carry or glance like a .22 LR. Besides it's fun to use a Hornet!! ;D When a full power load for the hornet is only 12 grn of powder and winchester bulk bullets are dirt cheap I can shoot the hornet for less than I can a rimfire.
Not to start a fight but the Hornet is why I have no use for a 17 HRM.

That's a pretty typical representation of what you see squirrel hunting. In a rural area with few farms or houses, I'd take the shot if it was in sure killing range. If it was a 'reach' in terms of range or wind, I wouldn't.

Obvouisly that was a trick picture
I tell you what, the outcome is suprising. I think it's the correct choice, but suprising. If I would of went on any other forum, everyone would say how wreckless that is and how I'm an idiot.
Yes, I would shoot

If you wouldn't take that shot, you sure wouldn't kill many squirrels now, would ya? Unless I'm hunting on the edge of town, which I sometimes do, and the shot is in the direction of that town, I'm shooting. Now to that attachment.... You'd think our fearless leader could post a picture, especially now that we're paying for another picture posting option, rather than making us open an attachment....Geesh... ........ ;D

I got to thinking, When I started Hunting and there were 3 or 4 farms in every section that might be a risky shot. But with the Urban Migration and most farmsteads being abandoned and eaten up by the farmers farming 1500-5000 acres instead of 160 acres, It's safer now to take that shot.
As far as other Forums, they are full of armchair hunters with little idea of what field conditons are. Information on the net is good, but it has also made it plain that there are a lot of Idiots out there that both have no clue and are willing to call others an Idiot?? Bet they would not have the balls in a face to face discussion!!! ;D ;D ;D You just have to grin and let it go.

I would take that shot with my .22 mag.
Dead tree rat. I have also never recovered a 22 from a tree rat. Then again most all of my tree rats are killed with a 22 mag or my ruger mark II 22 pistol.
I have not got a 22lr rifle at this moment. I have been saving up for a marlin 39a but a good deal on a marlin model 60 just fell in my lap so I might just get it first. I love lever actions but can't find a good 9422 XTR to go with my 9422M XTR.
