Having been a traditional MLer for over 30 years I've made a lot of observations while deer hunting. One of the most obvious is that for some reason the noise and smoke from a MLing rifle using black powder doesn't seem to spook deer in well over 90% of the time. However w/ a modern high power this isn't the case very often and I have no idea what happens w/ a in-line. Maybe you guys that use them can fill the rest of us in, I'm thinking they most likely spook @ the shot. I have my own thoughts about this. What are the rest of you guys' thought on why this is ?

A In-line hunter is just naturaly one to run from, They smell of beer instead of trade wiskey the latter a well knowen deer attacting agent. as to the beer a well knowen dear attracting agent. A in-liner talks loud on his beeping cell phone. The traditional noda peep or beep. When the traditional hunter shoots the deer just think the big boy just F@^*# to death. When a in-liner shoots it's holy cat's let's get out of hear before that idiot gets lucky and hits one of us!!

D-D, it was always my theory that a gunshot, be it BP or smokeless, didn't always make a deer run in panic. They may know something's wrong, if it's close, but not what or where. It's the moving after the shot that the hunter does- reloading, etc, that tips the deer off where the danger is. Most people, after they shoot at a deer, make some movements- at least lower the rifle, often reloading, with the noises that makes. Then the deer knows where you are.

If you have ever been shot at you will notice that the lower booming sound of B/P is harder to place. You can hear it but you can't tell where it came from. This is the theroy of some so called silencers. The idea is not to make the shot totaly quiet but the disguise WHERE it came from. As to how I know??? Over 50 balloons to date and not a miss.

I've had deer at 30 yards run off like their tails were on fire when shot at with a bow. and deer just stand there and look at you when you shot at them with a gun. Depends on a lot of thing on whether deer run off or not.

Hey Squealy, good to hear from you ;D
It depends on a lot of factors - distance it was shot at, hunting pressure, type of deer, wind direction, etc.
I will say that when a muzzleloader goes off, it's a dull bellowing boom. A centerfire goes off and it's a sharp ear spliting crack. A deer's ears are more sensitive than ours I'm sure.

I know... I was taking the opportunity to poke a little fun at ya'll. No... I do not notice that they run off any more with the inline than a side hammer gun. I have deer stick around all the time after a shot and just look at the deer that fell like... "WTF is wrong with YOU?" So I do not believe that inlines scare them any more than traditional guns. But, I do not shoot super duper magnum go fast, earschplittenzeloudenboomer loads either. I shoot a 450 grain .50 in a .54 sabot being pushed by 85 grains of 2F powder. Ask Squealy how the react... he's shooting a TRUELY EVIL smokeless Savage muzzleloader. Jabba
