so i have had this big ass tumbler given to me for a while now so today i decided to throw in all the .243 and 7mm rem mag brass i had laying around that had been fired in my two rifles. so how long should it run? also none of that has had the spent primers knocked out of them yet so is it a waste of time? also i just dumped them in there. is there a specific way to place them? i just treated it like a big old washing mashine. i just dump clothes into those too the few times i do actualy use one. (mothers day and maybe when i wash my own hunting clothes)

well i down loaded the manual and it just says/implies to just dump them in. so we'll see what they look like in a little while. i guess there's a couple hundred of them in there, i'll count when i take them out.

No, No, carefull placement is nessasary they must be placed only one at a time & they can not touch!! On a serious note, time will vary with type of media and it's condition, plus the condition of the brass.

Put them all in mouth up- that way they won't get full of media. If you believe that, I got a bridge to sell ya. Just dump em in. Klsm's right on, as usual, about how long. Experience will tell you that, after a few uses. Kinda doesn't matter if you tumble before or after decapping, as far as primer pockets- takes a ton of tumbling for the pockets to get cleaned. I tumble before decapping for one reason: to get the crud off the cases before I run them through the sizing die. Sometimes, I'll tumble them again after sizing, to get the case lube off the cases.

Clean the primer pockets by hand it's a lot easier than poking medial out of the flash holes. With new mwdia and not too dirty brass 1-2 hours should make 'em look like new. Just look into the tumbler now and again and when they are shiney they are done. If you have a shop and do other shop work save your old buffing compound sticks and when they are too small to use grind them up and add them to the media in lieu of the expensive RESTORER.

I don't use any of those expensive additives (do I sound like Red? ) I just change media when it seems to take longer to polish brass than it used to. I look for a sale on media and pick some up when it's cheap. I have heard that pet shops sell crushed corncobs or walnut shells for pet bedding- and the stuff is supposed to be real cheap (damn, I DO sound like Red!) and work well in a tumbler. Haven't tried it, myself.
