I'd like to shoot the damn things in my yard but the little lady won't let me - they're a nuissance!
I don't usually fool with squirrels until deer season goes out around the first of January. We have an early season here now too but with all the foliage on the trees and the underbrush (not to mention ticks, snakes, and such) it just ain't worth the effort. I'd rather dove hunt.

Rabbit & Squirrel both open the last Saturday in August every year here. I normally don't hunt till a bit later. They farm from fence to fence out here, the ony places to hunt are in river bottoms and waterways and a guy could expire due to blood loss from all the mosquitos!

I will give it a try in the morning. Work has been long hours lately. Nothing better than to watch the sunrise from under a busted up old den tree and see what numbers come out this year.
Normally just try a few grays in the early season. Won't hunt THOSE TASTY FOX till after deer season normally. Nothing better to learn still hunting deer than still hunting grays.
The 9422 Mag will be in tow of coarse.

The sunday sunrise was great. Sax a few fox rats but no gray's. Shot the 9422 twice both hit target so I guess I am ready for some gray's.

Let's hope the #2 midget doesn't learn things like "get hammered and go to a strip club."

well Red must have thought WWIII broke out. my son went through about 40.00 in shells to bring down 2 tree rats. we caught up with Red about 6:15 and headed to his honey hole. we hunted until about 9:00 then we headed over to one of the lakes and wet a line for a while. the fish were not cooporating at all but it was a pleasant morning out. all in all a fine day. Red thanks for everything, the boy had a great time.

In fairness though, the price of shells has gone up... We weren't hunting but 30 seconds when we heard 2 squirrels cutting hickories. Unfortunatly they were about 10 yards outside of shotgun range and 3 people just made too much noise trying to enter the woods (I blame the kid ;D ;D ;D ). So they took off running. I was certain they would be back but they decided to split. Now it's almost like Jim had been to that spot before. He was pretty persistant in going down further in the woods while I wanted to go to these 10 hickory trees. So we split up and went on our way. So I got to the hickory trees and there wasn't anything going on. and on the ground are hickory nuts no bigger than white oak acorns - which squirrels won't eat. Little did I know then that they had gone into the woods where there was hickory nuts the size of bowling balls. About that time 5 shots rang out from his son's single barrel. ;D Apparently they had some problems with dead squirrels getting lodged up in the tree and then wounded squirrels hitting the ground and running. So it got to be about 9:00. It was still pretty cool out but the breeze was blowing pretty good so we opted not to try a new spot. It wasn't too bad - we saw or heard maybe 10 all together I guess. We decided to go catfish were the conservation department dumped 4 trucks of fish in last week (as in right were they backed the truck up). But in the middle of day like that catfishing can be awefull slow and was. I'm glad he had a good time. I imagine 2 squirrels is probably a pretty successful morning for him.

Red, the reason i wanted to go where we did was because i knew my son's steath ability or the lack there of was going to keep you from getting anything i forgot to mention the gifts Red had for me that morning. first he has a old youth orange huinting vest that was never used that he gave my son. then he handed me an autographed photo from Jack Clark, one of my all time favorite cardnals! then he topped it off with a Egg McMuffin for breakfast! i owe ya one Red. thanks!
