Denver man hurt at fur trade fest in Chadron, Neb. Advertisement CHADRON, Neb. (AP) -- A powderhorn exploded during Chadron's annual Fur Trade Days, sending a Denver man to the hospital with burns.
Authorities say the 35-year-old's injuries are not life threatening. The man's identity has not been released.
The explosion happened Friday afternoon at the buckskinner's camp southeast of town. The camp is one of the events featured at the celebration.

Now I do not know the cause hear, But a good time to remind all not to load a gun from your horn and one of the two reasions for swabing the bore between shots. I am curious as what he did do?

The first thing we teach kids in hunter's Ed is not to pour powder directly from your horn into the muzzle of the rifle... I guess this guy wasn't listening to that part of the course...

The first thing we teach kids in hunter's Ed is not to pour powder directly from your horn into the muzzle of the rifle... I guess this guy wasn't listening to that part of the course... Since it was "fur trade days" I would have to assume they were running an authentic demonstration. And while the most dangerous, that's the way it was done...

Red I do have some HISTORY books for sale. I agree Two Moons. I doubt anyone ever poured directly from the horn. Unless possibly in a running fight? Pouring directly from the horn is a Hollywood interpretation. And as is often the case Wrong.

Even Rogers Rangers were told to pour inot their hand and then into the barrel. I have nevver seen an old bag set up without a measure or TWO? F C Selous talks about using a handfull of powder from a LEATHER bag whne fast reloading for elephants, but he only carried enough powder for a few shots at a time.

Was this a 4gauge or 8gauge T/M's ? As both could seem like a pretty big hand full.

This was his 4 gauge shooting a 4 ounce ball hardened with zinc for penetration.
