Well as you could tell from my post on upland game I went Dove hunting yesterday. I took my dog Molly with me. Kind of was worried about how she would do as I hadn't had a chance to do more than throw a few dummies for her. She does get a long walk every morning and every evening though to keep her in shape but that isn't enough. Or so I thought.
Donnie must of done a hell of a job training her as she was awesome.
First dove I downed I hollered at her to fetch it up when it hit the ground. I thought cha right. She is going to get the bird and eat it and that will be the end of this. Oh me of little faith. She rand and got the bird just like she knew exactly what she was doing and brought it straight back to me as hard as she could go. Didn't slow down when she got to me though I hollered at her to drop the bird. Whats she do? She runs in circles around me for about 4 or 5 times like she is saying I got the bird and you don't. Na na na na na na. So I got the brain in gear and started praising her for the job she did and wouldn't you know it. She brought it to me and let me take it. Didn't drop it on the ground or nothing. Just gave it to me like she was supposed to. Boy did she get a praising then. Both by me and the kid I was hunting with. Then she proceeded to do the same thing with every bird I dropped.
Only problem we had was when it got warmed up and turned dry and dusty she had a problem finding a couple. She just could not pick up any scent. When that happened the first thing I did was wash her nose. The next bird I dropped she went right to it.
So from the looks of it, all the training Donnie did with her last year all paid off in spades. She did just an absolutely amazing job for a pup that isn't even close to 2 yet. Even impressed the kid with me as he runs German short hairs and has a couple really well trained dogs. ;D
