Well I first really met my Pointing Lab pup after Dep-Don left. Up till that time the wife dominated the pups attention and ME well I was still not sure it was the pup I wanted but it definatly was the one that the wife wanted and I didn't argue much Its first real day here started with me being woken at 4:30Am. ( I need to work on that here real soon) and thank god the wife said I'll get her. She got up and took the pup out which when they came back in the pup wanted to play. Well my living room is now afloat with a half pickup load of puppy toys of all kinds and colors. So there was no shortage of things to attract her attention but there is this one dang toy that looks like a dollys toy that has a puppy safe squeeker inside of it. Let me tell you, I could hear that squeeker squeeking for the next two hours. I finally couln't take it anymore and got out of bead to find the both of them (Wife and Dog) sleeping on the couch. Right away the pup began to whine and the wife said she wants out. So here I am in my sweat shorts with a pair of sandles and a hooded sweat shirt standing outside waiting for the dog to go. Now remember, we just had a blizzard on friday morning and there is snow still on the ground. Its cold out. So what I'm teaching the pup and learning how to teach the pup this is to Pee and Poop on comand. Its taken me all day but this evening when I took her out and comanded PEE/POOP she did them both imeadiatly. ;D So I learned something new. She is trainable. Now I wonder what tomarrow will bring. Maybe walking on a leash. This ought to be good.

Take your time Bill. Things will happen in time. Buy the Book "Game dog" by Richard Wolters as soon as possible. Sounds like she's got a brain. She sure is a good lookin pup. I was pretty pleased to see DDs' pups. Nice lookin critters they are! Don't be teachin her any bad habits we will have to undo later! GRIN!

When I was young my sister had a cat that did that to dads work boots. We found out about it when we heard the cat hit the wall shortly after dad putting on his boots. Cat left and didn't come back. Today it was 4:30 AM again. This time it was my turn to take her out. Did just fine, Molly poop/pee. There she goes and poops and pees. Then I brought her back in and fed/watered her then she wanted to play. This we did for about an hr and then she wanted out and we do the outside thing again. When we came back in she lay down and I thought what the heck and lay down on the couch to catch a nap. Over she comes and wants up. Ok she gets up. First dang thing she does is attack my head and trys to bite me. I say no and push her back. Well after the third time of this she got a finger thump on the nose along with a NO and putting her on her back. That was the end of that, she got down and went to sleep. So I guess I learned something too. She is still learning.

Bill, I say when you let her out in the middle of the night when you want to be sleeping... let her out... NO play then back in the crate. NO play.
Right now you are teaching her that when she wakes you up... she gets some affection, and that IMO is the wrong thing to do.

Boy Dep-Don You wern't just kidding on raising a kid again. Jabba, I missed your post but today I got up again at 4:30 Am (we had kept her up as late as we could last night) and when she started the whining thing I got up took her out and Molly Poop/Pee. And right away she did her job but this time when we came back in I put her right into the crate again and she went to sleep again. Had to HUSSSSSSS a few times but it worked. Up again at 6:00 am with a repeat of 4:30 AM but just a Pee. That I can live with. Just wish I had done that the day before. All I wanted to do all day was go sleep someplace.

You are a lot nicer than I am. We'll leave it at that. Once a dog gets trained... being a dog at my house is a real good gig... but there is a few months of doggie boot camp... as my friends describe it. Of coure... quite a few people have sent their dogs to my house for a week long CRASH course in how to get along as a dog. Good luck man. Remember... a little bit of being strong and "mean" now sure will make life a lot easier for you next year. Jabba

Bill, at least you only have your wife to undo all your work with that pup. i have a wife and 3 midgets that undo everybit of training i do with my mut. ;D it's to the point now, "I ask the dog if I can sit"

it's to the point now, "I ask the dog if I can sit" Now thats funny JimH ;D I don't have to be that bad with her as of yet Jabba as I taught her the first time what I ment by NO and what happens when she don't pay any attention. Dogs hate it on their backs and I don't have to hurt them. But when you have my ugly mugg in your face while I hold you down on your back so you can't move you learn to pay attention real quick or you get a repeat performance. Thus also the reason that the pup is now trying to dominate the wife as she knows who the pack leader is. Actually this is probably one of the smartest pups I have ever worked with. This is good and bad as you have to be fast to keep up with her. If your not she will one up you real fast.

I am never really mean Bill. I use the submit them on their back all the time.
I am serious about the no play during the pee/poop breaks when it's supposed to be sleeping time.
The simple one rule is to NEVER reward unwanted behavior. It's really that simple. Reward good behavior, and affection is usually enough. NEVER reward unwanted behavior. Period.
That's the simple rule to follow when training dogs IMO.
