This is something I wonder about but haven't a clue. My guy Franklin is about 90+ lbs., not particularly fast but an excellent swimmer. Anything you throw he'll return to you automatically. They don't have to be trained to fetch. My first Giant Schnauzer, Fritz, was the same way. They also have a very good sense of smell. It seems if they were any good at it I would have heard or read something. Anybody have any ideas? Best wishes.

Could probably train him to retrieve. I wouldn't take on the task of trailing game.

I remember reading somewhere that Schnauzers were originally bred to run wild boar in Germany.... I don't know how reliable the source was but I think I'm correct. So, if they were originally bred to chase wild pigs why not birds? I've seen MUTS that would hunt squirrels and hounds that would point quail.... who knows ... you could probably teach a dog to do most anything .... even Hunt!
