Summer is here and the dumps or what use to be dumps are teeming with the worlds best training targets. Rattus Rattus Norvigicus The common rat. Over the years I have had more fun going out towards dark and shooting these quick moving critters than I ever had shooting prarie dogs who just stand there. There is nothing like the joy of watching fresh rat drift down after a good shot whit a 58 muzzleloader connects. Seldom do you get a standing shot and after the first night you to sneak up on them like a flock of ducks. When you bum out with pistol or rifle a 410 and a rat that breaks cover at 90 mph and is on the open for 1/2 second is a real challenge.
I wish they would bring back the old town dumps.

You just want the old dumps to come back so you can start up your guided hunts for the Ratus Ratus. $100 bucks a night is good money but the stench is awsome sometimes. ;D

Nope, its AWSOME that anything could smell that bad. The methane gas comming off the garbage can sometimes gag a magot and the Rattus Rattus are almost bald from living in that enviroment.

I fondly remember shooting rats in the local dump when I was a kid. Today, of course, the dump is a landfill, and they poison the rats.....

I had a neighbor who would take me to the dump. Me with my BB gun, him with his 22. I was probably 8 years old and he'd always let me fire off a tube full, or two, from his pump. When I got a little older, and had a 22, we'd both put 50 or so rounds out in a quick session. We found that we could do more shooting if we took turns holding a spotlight on the little bastards after it got dark. Hard to beat it.
