Its great when a long range plan comes together.
A few months back Donnie and I were talking about squirrel hunting and he espressed the opinion that it would be fun to hunt squirrels with a .40 cal ML. At that time I told him no what you need for that is a .32. He thought it might be too small for what he needed and that it would be hard to keep clean and he just thought it too small.
Well seeing as how I had to adopt him as no one else wanted him. ;D Him being an ornery critter and all and plus I owed him a favor or two and also my wife and I being long time buckskinners decided that we needed to change Donnies attitude on life and things in general that pertain to ML's.
To shorten the story a bit what we did was found a .32 cal fullstock ML in the Cabela's Blue Ridge long rifle model in the bargain cave. I did some long searching to find one but what it was, was a NIB gun that had been a display gun. It had some handling marks but was basically an unfired gun but at a price I could afford.
When I took Molly up to be trained I presented him with this rifle. He didn't turn his nose up at it but he had been around this rifle a lot when he worked for Cabela's and probably hadn't really considered it or thought a lot about ever owning one. I had shot compatition for a lot of years and one of the few rifles that had ever really gave me a run for my money with me using my self built rifle and someone using a factory rifle was this Blue Ridge gun. Most people didn't even consider it when thinking of accurate rifles. Let me tell you that is one shooting SOB.
Anyway when I delivered my pup to Donnie I also presented him with this rifle. Ya I got the usuall from him. You can't do this and 10,000 reasons he couldn't except it but in the end I just told him it was his and I wern't going to haul it back home with me and if he didn't take it he should throw it away. It worked. ;D
When there we took the rifle to the range and began sighting it in. Donnie had problems with this and that and was a bit frustrated but in the end he shot it fairly well and began taking an interest in the gun finally. Too small of a gun though ;D
Well he practiced and practiced and did some filing and changing and finally got the sights where he wanted them plus some changes to the patch thickness and loads and yesterday he went squirrel hunting. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Well last night the wife and I came home from work and the answering machine was blinking. The wife hit the button as she passed and all of a sudden we hear this voice of a grown man sounding as excited as a 12 year old kid yelling over the phone about how he had MADE MEAT. ;D How this rifle is the best thing since fried eggs and toast and why would he ever need to use a .22 rifle again after using this rifle and how it takes the tops of squirrils heads right off and how if PBR used one of these rifles he would throw that dang Marlin in the river and so on and so on. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
There are some days when your just proud to meet people like Donnie and see their horizon's expanded a bit by you and see the excitement you have created. God I love it when a plan comes together.
