When I first started hunting rabbit and squirrel the only shotgun I had was a Remington 870 12ga. with the short barrel for deer. I think it's 20". I got used to this shotgun. with its the rifle sights, and became fairly good with it especially for rabbit. I guess it's a case of using the wrong gun with good results. Anyone else using the wrong riufle or shotgun but with good results, and no intention of changing? Best wishes.

You know what I use for rabbits?
870 12ga, short turkey-lenght barrel, with glo-rifle sights. I actually prefer the rifle sights over the bead !!! Of course with my improved cylinder, I find myself instinctivly shooting many times.
And I have no intentions of changing either!

Heck Cal, it's what I pick out of the gun locker what I use for cottontails. I mean, if I grab a 12ga that's what I use. I'm getting a little.... errrr... shhhh... old .... for the constant recoil of a 12ga ... so I try to pick up a 20 but ...
It also depends on where I'm hunting... if I know I have a lot of open space or long shots I like that 12... as far as barrel length goes, I only have a couple of 12's with short barrels and they're equiped with scopes ... so.. I wouldn't usually pick them up... but I really don't see anything wrong with using a short barrel, smooth bore 12.

Back in the old days... ..When I started hunting, there was no such things as choke tubes, and only well heeled scattergunners ever sprung for a Poly-Choke or Cutts Compensator. Second barrel? Get serious, not in rural western Pennsylvania anyway.... These were the days when many experienced hunters still toted a single shot. Many shotguns sported full choke barrels, a few had modified, and even most doubles were modified and full choked. When people around me started venturing to New York state to hunt, those 30" full tubes didn't work to well with slugs. One of the favorite fixes was a Stevens or Mossberg bolt action shotgun with the adjustable chokes on. Remember those. One guy I knew actually sprung for an 870 slug gun. Of course to do so he traded of his old Stevens double barrel, so the 870 was his only shotgun. Well let me tell you something, he started to become a legend of sorts with his prowess on rabbits with that short barreled open choke. After a few years we all started to figure it out, he wasn't that great of a shot, it was just that with an open choke, he was hitting more of those moving targets at the short ranges most shots are taken at. As soon as I got my hands on an IC pump gun, my hit ratio increased dramatically also. So I think that that short tubed gun is an excellent choice Cal. As a matter of fact, I would much prefer a short open choke such as your gun, over a 28 0r 30 inch modified or full choke gun, at least for the type of cover I have around my part of the country. Unless I'm turkey hunting or waterfowl hunting, the IC tube has been standard issue on my shotguns for years.

Count me in too! Anymore the only shotgun I use for everything is a Mossburg 500 Turkey gun. 24" barrel and the apropriate choke for the job. It balances well, is easy to carry and points fast. A fine choice for upland game. It might not swing smoothly enough for ducks or Geese but I don`t hunt them.

Hello Red,
Yeah, my Remington 870 deer barrel has the front and rear rifle sights. I suspect that's what makes it so effective. Even I can be a good shot with that. Best wishes.

What about the sights? Anyone hunt with something other than a bead? Not so far there has been a set of scope bases in the drawer that fits my 500 since I bought it. But I have yet to open the package?

Ahh, the Rossi... great little side X side... I've been trying to find one in 20ga that is chambered for 3" shells... I'd also like to have one with 24 or 26" barrels and screw in chokes... Man they make great rabbit guns... I would even consider a 12 or 16 ga... but I really want a 20...
You know talking about rabbit guns... I always wanted a .410 to hunt rabbits with ... so a couple of years ago I bought one... a Remington 870 ... I HATED IT... first I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the dam thing ... second it had no range... at 35 to 40 yards it was just plain useless... so I went back to the 20... I got to thinking about what kinds of shotguns I've used for rabbits and about the only thing I HAVEN'T used is something with a rifled barrel... auto's, pumps, side X sides, O/U's, single shots... but I keep coming back to the O/U or S X S ... and most times in 20 ga...

Years ago I went deer hunting for a week and, about mid-week, got disgusted and turned to dove hunting. The only gun I had was my 12 ga. Rem. 1100 Magnum. Fortunately I had brought along the 24" I.C. (smoothbore) slug barrel in case I got to hunt some place where slugs were legal. I changed out barrels, using the 24" slug barrel with 1-1/8 oz. loads of no. 7-1/2 shot and was pleasantly surprised as to what a good combination it made for pass shooting doves. It was certainly the wrong gun but it sure did a good job in saving an otherwise sorry hunt.

I'm new to the board so I don't want to press my opinions on you folks too much, but you guys have the right gun, not the wrong one. I started small game hunting at the age of six, in 1937, with a Stevens .22 single shot, mostly shooting shorts. At ten, in 1941, I got a .410 LeFever double, bored Modified and Full. Today I mostly use an old Remington bolt action .22 that was my dad's gun, or the .410, an old Model 31 12 ga. Remington pump with 18" barrel plus a Cutts Comp or a 97 Winchester with a Poly Choke on a 20" barrel. I learned long ago I could take a short-barreled open-choke shotgun and outshoot just about everybody who has a 3'' Magnum that's choked down "to shoot like a rifle," a term I've often heard.
Hey, it ain't a rifle! It's a shotgun!
Next month I turn 74 and I've collected squirrel, rabbit, quail, dove, grouse and a few pheasants almost by the ton in that 68 years. I learned long ago a short barrelled open choked shotgun, never more than a modified, puts more meat on the table.

I used a Rem 870 Wingmaster Riot with rifled sight on it for more years than I can remember. That was the fastest shotgun I have ever shot in my life. I might not be able to shoot 40 yds and kill ever bird but inside of 30 yds there just wasn't much that got away from me either flying or running.
