New Hornady Muzzleloading Bullet

Not for the traditional crowd, but looks like an interesting design for all you in-line guys. To me it looks like a better concept than sabots with handgun bullets.

Nope, just .50. I've always been a big .54 fan, in traditional muzzleloaders, bt it seems to me that the in-line industry is going hard to .50 calibers.

I'm convinced that a full caliber bullet has the capability of being more accurate, and ballistically superior, to a saboted handgun bullet.

Other than size, thin soft copper coat, and a red plastic nose, That is the same bullet used famously in are civil war, the minne. Looks to be shaped the very same and work the same But will sell great to all that think it is the cuting ege of tecnollogy, It was in 1860.

Bounce, good point ! The thing is just the shape of a CW Minie. Those were .58, of course, but the point still stands.
I use a cast Minie in my .50. It doesn't have the point, though, it has a flat on the nose. It's from the Lee mold, and it does work quite well.

Comparing military ammo to hunting ammo is like apples and oranges.
The goal of the military is the maim, where the goal for hunting is to kill quickly.

And I have a feeling so do the new hornady bullet. I see it's advertized as having "violent expansion". I just don't see it. I think the 45cal hollow point xtps (shot from 50 cal guns) would be better performing - expansion and energy wise. Likewise, I think the big hollow point, round nose, or flat point lead conicals would be the better choice.

People need to learn that deer are shot under 100 yards. In those conditions, massive heavy hollow points are best for muzzleloaders; that or heavy wide solid chunks of lead.

Just load it upside down Red, How do you think I make slaw out of large cabage heads. If you pour a prue soft minie it will mush enough for you.

I can't imagine how a .50 cal expanding bullet of that weight is going to be less effective than a lighter .45 cal expanding bullet?

And I take issue with the assumption that shooters of the minnie in history's intention was to maim the the enemy and not kill them outright? It flat out killed thousands.

While at Walmart the data I was given was that 70% of all Muzzleloaders sold were .50 cal. So it only makes sense that that would be a first offering.

Think I'll stick with the RB just the same. ;D

That theory that it's better to wound a military opponent was developed long after the Civil War. The Civil War made it abundantly clear that the Minie ball was a very effective killer.

A 250 or 300 grain hollow point that puts a hole the size of a half dollar in a deer is no joking matter. That's what a 45cal XTP will do.

I question the tipped bullets on deer (compared to other styles)- whether it be flextip or sst's. I have not used them, but I have no desire to either. My confidence level of them is not very high.

so this is a powerbelt without the plastic,thin jacketed bullet. it may work fine in some barrels but not in others. with a powerbelt the plastic is only there to keep the bullet down tight,without it your barrel diameter is going to have to be the perfect size for this bullet ,if not it will not stay seated. not all barrels are exact diameter.
