Man Jim that will be one damned fine rifle when Bookie gets her done for ya! I am a fan of his work. I'm in the process of deciding what my next gun will be. I'm hoping to convince Two Moons to build me a smoothbore rock lock! Probably a .62!

A .40 is a nice caliber to chose. Personally I like this caliber as a all around caliber!!!

What's the minumum deer caliber in Iowa?

Minumum is.45 for Deer, I may jump to that, but a .45 ball is pretty light(just a little over 100 grn as I recall) it would be adequate for deer of one stayed under 100 yds though.
Steve and I were friends as children, but with making a living and raising families we kind of drifted our own ways. He comes from several generations of gunmakers in the Tennesee Mountain style. And Yes Bubba he is pretty well known around the country. Last night he was telling me he had shipped a 14th century pistol ( fired with fuse or punk to touch hole)to Massachutsetts. My primary goal is to learn some of the tricks to building one from scratch. Since He lives just 10 miles from me, I hope to get some hands on tutoring from a master.

My instict says go with the .40 as for at least another year I'm too busy selling tags at Walmart to hunt Deer.
I have a .50 Cal CVA Hawken, that I never really liked. There was something wrong with that particular barrel( I know guys who had no problem with them) and after a couple shots it got nearly impossible to load. I would rather strip it out and use the hardware to build a .54. Since I have the stock for a pattern all I would need is wood for a new stock, barrel and breech plug. I'll never be one to bash in-lines, but traditional is where my heart lies.

Jim, I own a 40 cal and one of the sweetest guns to ever come down the pipe. Its a pennsilvania style of about 1790 and a copy of one that had been converted to percussion. Like I said totally sweet. Problem is I never shoot it. I either shoot my .32 or my .58 but never it. It just sits there because Its too big for squirrils and too small for deer legally. If I was to do it over again I would of built it in .45 or something I could of used for hunting. Then I would of had an excuese to shoot it. I don't get much chance to get away to shoot matches any more which is about all its good for but if you intend to shoot paper the .40 is awsome.

And for those of you whose taste runs more towards the polished Brass Pennsylvania style rifles Here's Hoot Al's site another builder from Newton who's at Steve's shop most every night for a while. www.midiowa.com/hootalrifleshop/ He's got a very neat step by step tutorial on his site. Mispelled Pennsylvainia? Sorry Scott! ;D

When it was legal I took 4 deer with a 40. I also shot it for rabbits and squirrel with a light powder charge. I ran a record of 14 striaght head shots on squirrell on fall with the 40. It had a heavy enough ball to hold up for 100 yard shooting and can be down loaded for small game. This is my favorite caliber and the one I recommend for a small to medium gun. The 45 will throw a 130 grain ball and is a good deer gun to 75 or so yards. Although I have seen a r/b kill with one shot at 90 yards, you have to put the ball in just the right spot with a 40 or a 45.
