The match went out to 873 yards, I think. I was there yesterday and they were shooting cast bullets in leveractions. I think they are shooting BPCR today. It sounds like there is a regular shoot in the area regularly in the summer. I have been looking at BPCR's.

Dakota ~
I see the one shoot has past already (7/15 - 7/16). Did you attend, & if so, did ya shoot in the competition ?
The event coming up on 8/12 - 8/13 looks to be a fun match as well. Heck, it mentions food on the flyer, as well as shooting. They no how to grab a persons attention don't they ;D ;D

I hoping to be there for the cast bullet lever action shoot. Have not settled on a BPCR rifle yet. Am not sure I would spend that much on a gun? I am looking for 30-30 cast bullet loads. I believe the only cast bullet I have is 180 gr round nose with gas check. That is what I am shooting in it now. Doubt that it's accuracy could be competitive. Actually I loaded these cartridges for bunnies last winter but was too busy to get much hunting in. It was accurate enough for up to 75 yards on cotton tails, I thought. I was in Eastern SD over the 15 and 16 so I didn't make that one.

Mike Venturino is a staff writer on Handloader magazine these days, and he's also a BPCR competitor. He's written several articles on guns, loads, and techniques for BPCR. Might be worth getting your hands on the last year or so of Handloader magazine.

When Rifle and handloader first came out I started reading them (from issue 1). I thought they were the best! Any more I think they are advertisers for manufactures. Mike seems to advertise Sharps. I appoligize if I sound negative. I still buy their magazines but am not very impressed with them anymore.

Dakota For Cowboy shooting try a 150-170- rnfp in 30-30 cases with either 8 grains of Unioque or 11 grains of Red Dot. Use a good lube and use Pistol primers. You might want to check as some clubs do not allow gas check bullets. If you can use them great no leading. But is you have to use plain base i would go to 50 50 wheel weights and lino for a good hard bullet.
Don't be to hard on Mike he writes to sell and when you do that you write what the magazines want. My only gripe is the DUKE business, that seems pretty much an affection to me.

I have been dabbling in different lubes. Rooster Red is what I have been trying lately. I also coat the bullets in dry graphite or moly powder after sizing and lubing - mostly so they won't stick together before I load them.. My loads were much closer to full power loads than the ones you mention, something like 30 grains 3031. But I do not recall for sure. I have not yet been to a cowboy match. The local matches seem to be silhouette. I am not bragging about my load - it isn't accurate enough for competition! I am more than willing to buy another mold. The one I have now I bought for 30-06 - practice for paper matches.
