My great grand father fought in the civil war. I never knew him. My dad did. Great grand pa only indictated the war made him very sad and would not talk about it. He came out to Timber Lake area (SD) after the war and was sort of a recluse ever since then. The dirty thirties made most of his off spring move away from that area.

I too had a Great-grand Father who served for the north. The Spencer if I remember right belonged to Phil's grandfather I don't remember if he served in the war or not. I believe it was brought new and has been in the family since. So I'd be Glad if one of my boys inherits it and it stays in the family

I just came across an new OLD book. I got a copy of Ned Roberts "THE SCHUTZEN RIFLE". This covers all single shot hunting and target rifles from 1876 to 1900 and has a ton of good information on loading and shooting. Ned was a real fan of the Marlin/Ballard rifles and he considered the Ballard Pacific the most accurate hunting rifle ever made. His Ballard Pacific rifle would shoot 200 yard offhand groups of under 6" and he considered a 4" offhand group and having the gun shooting just right. He did comment that this required wiping between shots or the groups would go up to 10" or more. These were all 10 shot groups from a breech seated 38-55. Bench rest groups from these guns would go 2 1/2" at 220 yards with record groups going in under 2". In Roberts last articles in the 50's no one had bested these groups with a modern gun.
