Today was day off so I took my rifle to the range again. This time to shoot 100 yard targets. It's safe to say that I personally am much more capable of hitting small targets at 50 yards than I am at 100 yards! The gun sure does shoot but me? well......I tend to lose focus a bit when the front blade coincides with a black bullseye. I kept all of the balls on the target and was 50% in the black 10" bull at that range so I am capable of killing a deer cleanly at 100 yards but don't think I should push it beyond that range until I am a better shooter. Which is ok anyway cause where I live the odds of seeing a deer much beyond that aren't very great anyway. LOL! I'm sure as I keep shooting I'll learn to shoot better but at least I know that I'm gonna be ok this fall! I didn't measure the groups cause they were no where near as good as the last groups I shot But they were all at least pretty close.

A good 100 yard group for that rifle will be in the 3" range. Remember that whats good at 50 may not hold up at 100. Iusualy work up my best load at 100 and then use that for hunting.

Most offten donnie a 25yd target will print about the same as a 100yd target a 50yd target will allways be a good 1-1/2 to 2 inches higher, but the zerro on the curve comes out at the same point at 25 & 100 at least will with the right powder charge on the 100. Many of are club members will shoot about the same score at 25 & 100yds but shoot worse on the 50 cause they use the same target at 50 and most do not practice the 50 nearly as much and because of the rise in the flight of the ball is not zeroed for the 50yds as most all are guns are zeroed at 25yds or 100yds because the two intercange very well. most zero on 25 and then just make a powder charge change at 100 if a change is even nessasary??

I might add more powder usealy is a flater shooting ball so more shoots lower more than not. The arch seems to be differant from gun to gun. and all you have to do is get it all mated to your likeing.

Thanks guys. I just hafta keep working at it till I get it right. I think the biggest problem right now is my own lack of ability to shoot the iron sights well! I plan to shoot again on either monday or Tuesday at 100 yards again, I think I'll start out at 25 yards and get that right first as you suggest Bounce. I'm really pleased with 50 yards but I think I may need a differant target at 100 that forces me to aim for a smaller point. I bought some 100 yard small bore targets and probably wasn't focussed except to put em somewhere on the black 10 inch bull. Maybe a smaller bull will force me to shoot less sloppy. I really was not pleased with my performance yesterday! Like I said the rifle shot great but I got lazy! I did manage to seat a patched ball with no powder charge! Now that is slightly unnerving! I ended up taking the nipple off and worming a few grains of powder into the gun, this pushed the ball forward in the barrel enough that I could get about 50 or so gr in then reseat the ball and shoot it outta there! I had no nipple wrench with me and had to use a pliers to unscrew the nipple. I won't ever go to the range without all of my tools again. What a greenhorn! Of course there were two other guys there to witness so I provided a little amusement for them. Bill told me I'd do that sooner or later. And I cussed him for jinxing me the whole time!

Jim, I'm using a bench. The problem for me is becoming proficient with the Iron sights at long range. Like I said I'm thinkin that the large bull just allowed me to be sloppy. I'll try a smaller bull this week and see if it doesn't force me to tighten up a bit. Also like Moons said I may need to reformulate my powder charge for the 100 yard range. I don't think the groups I shot were , by any means, terrible. I guess 5" but I sure would like to tighten "em up some. I know that as it stands, no deer is safe if he/she gives me an honest crack out to 100 yards but, I'm just not yet totally happy. I still have a lot to learn about this game! I do know that shooting this rifle is WAY more fun than it ever was to shoot my 7MM. I guess the hard thing for me is the sights. I'm never certain that I'm holding them EXACTLY where I was on the preceeding shot at that long range!

I'm guessing hear some on your sights & sight picture, but my guess is that rifle will shoot dead on if the front blade is level with the top of the knoch in the rear sight. To see how your doing I offten use a 6:00 hold on the bottom of the black bull [easyest to find for sight picture] every time. Off hand sence I'm not all that steady I allow the gun to flow back and forth acrose the target point & and i feel i'm aproching the spot smooth and it feels good I touch off just as I get their, on ocasion I use up & down rather than back & forth.

;D I got an email from Donnie telling me how sore his shoulder is. It seems that he keeps forgetting and putting that sharp butt plate up to his shoulder rather than out on the arm part of the shoulder ball. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I think he will get retrained sooner or later, but it just might take some time. ;D what's funny is we can get a puppy to learn faster than we can get ourselves sometime. donnie i'm poken fun more at me than you.
