I've had pretty good success over the years standing up against a big tree in thick cover (as opposed to sitting down). Today was a little different... I got a mid-morning bird going in thick cover so of course I stood next to a big hickory tree calling. Like clockwork he came right in and popped out of the brush at 25 yards. I was 99% ready - all I had to do was move the gun about an inch to take my final aim. AND A PIECE OF BARK (ATTACHED TO THE TREE) GOT LODGED BETWEEN THE BARREL AND PUMP AND I WAS STUCK. So of course I was busted fidgeting. Lesson learned: pull all the hickory bark off where you plan to rest the gun, not most of it.

Red, I hate to say this but, if you had been sitting down with your gun across your lap, you would have gotten the bird!

Red, I hate to say this but, if you had been sitting down with your gun across your lap, you would have gotten the bird! Yeah in this instance probably so. Sitting down shots ranged from 15-25 yards. Standing, shots ranged from 25-35 yards. That's enough of a difference to risk standing. But when standing, you have to be quick. I obviously was not...

Well the biggest problem with standing, at least for me (and I think most people), is standing COMPLETELY STILL FOR EXTENDED PERIODS! Most people can't and are continually shifting their feet or otherwise moving. And, as you know, a turkey is going to pick up on the least little movement. Also, when sitting down, you don't present as much of a profile and (again I think) can get to your gun faster and with less movement. Of course, as we all know, opinions are like rear ends: everybody has one.
