I bought a 44 mag to take with us to Alaska. In research I found out that I have to get approval to bring it along with filling out a declaration form. I couldn't bring it if I was just staying in Canada. Once I cross the border with it I have 7 days to get to Alaska. The same thing holds true coming back. There is a $25 fee that needs to be paid IF I get the approval once I cross the border. It has to be locked, in a locked opaque box and kept locked somewhere other than the passenger area. I will have to lock it in the camper. I sent the application in today so now I have to wait to get the approval letter.
What a pain!

Sounds like buying a can of bear spray when you get into Alaska is the way to go...

Send the 44 to a friend or guide in Alaska UPS (or FedEx, etc.). Then pick it up when you get there. Do the same when you're ready to go home.

I don't have a friend in Alaska and I am not using a guide for anything when we are there. We are also spending a couple weeks in the lower 48 before we get to Canada.

Canada has always been a pain regarding bringing in guns from the US, particularly handguns. Apparently they have gotten a lot more restrictive since 9-11 and all the other terrorist activity.
