They say if you throw anywhere but straight ahead you'll get your line cut...

I've seen similar pictures of opening day here in Va. The hatchery truck dumps them the day before the season and they're all gone the day after the season opener. All the fishermen are lined up shoulder to shoulder to catch a 6" trout. That doesn't look like fun to me either. However, whatever floats your boat!

The Missouri parks stock nightly based on the number of daily tags sold that date the year prior.
The opener and the derby days is when they dump some 5-10 pounders but you won't see me there...though I like to go a couple days after the derby ends and there is normally some nice 15-18" fish.
On a normal day I can catch 15 fish in about 6 hard hours, and I'm not the greatest. Size is normally good, they are all normally around 12" and you'll probably catch a couple pushing 15".
Just once I would like to go to a private river and fish where a small fish is 3 pounds.

Years ago I witnessed the opening day stampede in Virginia, while I was camping in the Shenandoah Valley. The Fish and game officer actually fired his pistol as a starting signal, and the fisherman all stampeded to the stream. Crazy. Three days later there was no one fishing the stream. I caught a bunch of 13 inch rainbows with a fly rod - threw them back. Hatchery fish taste like crap.

We have a lot of people hit the rivers for opening of trout season but nothing like that. Ours is the first weekend in May. If one can wait a week or so they are the only ones fishing the river.
