Well in between right now jobs and such I built a 22 Hornet Super Topper.
You remember the Toper the H and R break open? Well I wanted a heavier barrel and a 1-12 twist in a Hornet and then I looked in the closet and founsa 223 take off barrel from a Ruger #1, a heavy barrel. I cut it off the 24" and used it to line the shotgun barrel on an old H and R Long Tom with a blown up barrel. Ended up with a heavy 22 hornet. Since I trimed the Rure barrel ar each end I have a fresh leade in the rifle and a nice smooth crown and a full 24" barrel. The twist is 1-12 so I can shoot regular 224 bullets up to 60 grains if I want but I will be using this for cast loads runing from 22 lr to 22 magnum velocity. I still have to mount the scope but the rifle is done and looking OK. I have a scope base ordered and will probably put on an old 4X that I have as there is no need for more on a 150 yards gun. i remember a friend of ours had one of these in 22 Jet and it was a dandy little gun for coyotes and such at medium range and in addition I will have a reloadable 22.

Lil gun is a great powder in the 22 hornet. Magic pixie dust.

I used that in my other Hornet bt there I was after a 200 yard coyote load and I was getting nearly 3000 fps from a 45 gain bulet. Here I willbe shooting mostly cast and looking for 1400 or so with a 50 grain bullet, I want a reloadable 22 just in case.

I use the .22 Hornet barrel for my Handi Rifle almost exclusively for squirrels. I worked up a .22 LR emulation handload based on the NRA handloading manual of 3.5 gr. of UNIQUE behind a 45 gr. lead gas-checked bullet. It works great on squirrels and I have essentially a reloadable .22 LR.

Reloads until the brass cracks. Hornet brass is crappy while I have never loaded it at 22 LR levels even at 22 mG levels if you got 5 to 10 reloads out of a case you were lucky dog.
Push that brass and we got about 3 to 5 reloads before lines started. Maybe we had a bad batch.

It will be ages before my Hornet cases are fired 5 times, so I am not unduly concerned about case life. I have heard though that Hornet brass is thin and doesn't last long. Using predominantly these greatly reduced loads should help.

Even 5 reloads per case is better than $90 a carton 22's. Dovehunter, that's the load I am looking for exactly. I will have to find a mould next right now 22 moulds are in short supply it seems. I sure hate messsing with that little gas check though so I will probably get a double cavity and ream out the gas check in one side.

Two Moons:
I have also been using small pistol primers in my squirrel loads. Several people on other message boards recommended this and they certainly seem to work okay. They are very accurate, at least to 50 yds. or so. I didn't really want the gas check bullets either but that was all I seemed to be able to get. I have always been afraid of the gas checks separating and hanging up in the barrel. I always look through the barrel after every shot to make sure this didn't happen.
DD:
I recently got a bucket of 1400 Rem. Golden Bullets (the 36 gr. hollow points) at Dick's Sporting Goods for $69.95. That was a super price, at least for around here. I have seen these same buckets at other places for $140 which I thought was extreme. I would rather have had the 40 gr. solid points, but with the way things are around here, you pretty much have to take what you can get.
