What do you think? What are the 3 most popular varmint calibers of all time? Some have seemed to be real whizbangers only to die out rather quickly. Some seem to have been around forever. Which would you select and why? Best wishes.

The first two are no brainers in my opinion 1. 223 2. 22-250
3. 243...?
I'll tell you why, the "best ever" is not going to die (such as the 222, 220, etc). The "best ever" is going to be best sellers in the beggining and still today and tommarow !!!

I agree with the 223 and 22-250, but the third would be a guess. Maybe the 222, for it's years as #1, or the 220 Swift, being king for a while, dipping to almost obscolescence, and then returning for it's deserved share. Or maybe if we talk about longevity, the 22 Hornet, although I don't think it sees the amount of serious varminting that the others do.
I think my vote is for the 222 for #3 on the list.

Hmmm, 22-250, no question about it. Probably 223 as well, considering it's chambering in AR type rifles as well as more traditional varmint rifles. The third one is the hard one to guess.... might well be 222 Rem. For a long, long time, the 222 was everywhere and chambered in a ton of rifles. As well as seeing heavy use on the benchrest circuit. If the third isn't the 222 Rem, then it's 22 Hornet. That caliber goes back a long way, as is still in use today.

22-250, along with cartiges that are about the same. Yes I'm grupeing much the same together so the .223 is allso in this group, Then the 30-30 type, yes no one talks about them but silently millions are used even today, then ,243 & 6mm ones for third

We've got a lot of people putting saying 22-250 and 223. We're not saying what's the best - we're not even saying what's most popular right now. The question is what is most popular all time?
Anyone want to switch those around?

I still have to stay with my top 3 picks but dang that .22wrm wants to sneek in there. that 22 hornet sure was real popular then died down a little but has seemed to come back in favor from what i am seeing.

I used to see a list, I think it was published by a Reloaders Association. The list gave us the sales of reloading dies for the year by manufacturer and caliber. Since most varminters seem to be reloaders as well it appeared to me a fairly good indication of what was popular and sold most, but I haven't seen it for some years now. Best wishes.

There's a huge flaw in that theory of counting. 223 ammo can be dirt cheap - although most who go that route just spray it out of their blackguns.

The .223 is probably the biggest seller in ammo for varmits right now as their are a ton of rifles built and chambered for this round. Yes a lot of them are the (BLACK GUNS) but I probably see 3 bolt actions sold for every black gun. Reason for this is the cheapness of the ammo. I see very few rifles sold compairitve to them in the .223 WSSM though and after the .223 comes the .17 HMR. This is weird as I see guns sold that cost from $100 to $1000 plus for this rifle and the guys are using it for praire dogs as its quiet and accurate. They also claim their shooting praire dogs out to 250 yds with it. The .22 Hornet became popular again when Ruger built the Ruger 77H for it which is little more than an overgrown 77/22 Mag. Shoots good though and a lot of the guys shoot it as its cheap to reload ammo for it but even it falls far short of what the .223 and .17 HMR is doing. The .243 Win is holding its own and the .22-250 also along with the .25-06. Very few .222 Rifles are being made or ammo being sold for it but its still being sold in small quanitys but right now for number 3 in what I see sold is the .204 Ruger So for my list of latest and greatest and most popular it reads like this. .223 Rem / 5.56 Nato .17 HMR .204 Ruger

hey bill i agree with your statement but the question was/is "the most popular of all time" since the 204 is fairly new would you like to revise your list of the three most popular varment caliber of "all time"

Ahhh....actually it was, " Most popular all time centerfire varmint calibers"... ...So that would disqualify both the 204 and 17 HMR. But you did good with the 223 Bill... ;D
