I don't have one... and think I need one...
Who likes what... and what do you think I need to spend to get a decent one?
Seems like $1700-$1800 for a decent 2 hour fire safe.

Maybe... but I want to keep some cash in it too. That's what I'm really worried about in a fire. I don't really have any guns worth anything. Sentimental value only really.

I picked up a decent one from Amazon.com for about $800. It had free shipping too! I didn't want to have to pay the freight on that one!!!

Century is the safe company with the Mary jane included. They use Inmates from a mexican prison to do the shipping.
Jabba the very best in the state is in Zionsville IN. Johnson safe company. Get a big one as everybody wants a "big Johnson" safe. These I would trust to anything a safe could do. Jeff is the owner. They are comercial quality and I have personally installed many for customers back when i was doing security system work. Needless to say they are rather salty in price but the best and Indiana made. I just could not justify the cost.
I went with my local guy who sells Liberty safes. I have a "fat boy JR." and a revere dad has a presidential model. Here is the info on my local guy but he passed away. I bought several guns from his wife. My rem 541i and several rem 700's. He is about 12 minutes from my house and I believe the business is still running. Got the fat boy with a dent/scratch

I went and looked at one from Craigslist last week. It was a 1400F for 120 minutes safe by redhead. It was a nice safe... but the guy wanted $1200 for it, and balked at $1000 offer. I walked even after a hour drive to look at it.
I am not happy with the electronic key pads. I'd like one with a dial. It seems to me that if you have a fire... it melts to electronics off.. then you have to pay someone to come open your safe...

With all the recient new gun purchasers the used safe market has expanded. The new ones are back ordered. Yes major fireproofing is great if you have paperwork or cash reserves but 1400 for 120 is going to be more than I believe you need. If you are putting it I to the basement or on top of a funeral pire the maybe the cash would still survive. Safes are hard to move. Used safes are hard to move. If you can wait until Black Friday you can get a real deal. Still have to move it into place and rent a dolly and pizza and beer for the helpers.
I have a electronic lock and a dial like them both. I change the battery at New Year's Eve with the smoke detector.
Talk to Jeff at Johnson safe. Pay once cry once. The best safes in the nation. You can choose all fire rating and color and lock options. Made in Indiana in Zionsville. He delievers and installs.
My guy in markleville is still in business but back ordered 4 months.

If your worried about fire and burn time you can always take a sheetrock bucket and fill it with water and put it on top of the safe with the lid on that is. As the heat builds up the bucket of water will heat up and turn to steam. One bucket full will add about 30 minutes of burn time to the safe as the steam holds back the fire. Liberty makes a great safe but I would stay away from the dial safes. Reason is, if it is not perfectly level it can make the tumblers hang up and cause all kinds of problems getting it open. Especially in a hurry. :-)
