My brother (adult) normally only bow hunts but he has decided he wants to buy a rifle (leaning towads a Savage Axis) instead of borrowing my 7mag every few years.
His criteria is 1. something with lighter recoil (which is a general statement given the kind of rifle), though he shoots 3" steel shot all the time.
2. something he can shoot in the woods as well as prone 300+ yards. Probably medium sized game only.
3. Readily available ammo
I told him he needs a bolt action and I'd personally like to see it bigger than a 243. So my list is as follows with my personal favorites being either the 7-08 or 30-06 (just in case he wants to go for bigger game). Really, he can't go wrong with any of these. I suppose I'll go with the 30-06 for this poll

7-08 you get the case size of the 308 with the nice 7mm selection of bullets. Will do anythingwithin 300 yards that the 30-06 will do and ammo is easy to find even in this ammo scarce enviroment. recoil is easy even for little girls and guys that play video games all day.
Stay away from the axis and the rem 710 and the TC venture rifles. Why a bolt action only.
I would make the leap of faith and go with the gun that most likely took the most deer ever. The marlin 336 pre safety or at least pre remington in 30-30 with leverevolution rounds and a redfield 2-7 power scope (or a Vortex) Should be able to get the gun for 300-400 and the scope 120 or so. Vortex is nice stuff for the money and has a PBR proof warranty.

Jmarriott, I understand the Rem 710 poo poo, but the other two, while fugly, will shoot well on average. My thought for his brother since he strikes me as a no frills kind of guy would be to go with the good old boring 308. I say that even though I lust over 7-08's and other non standard cartridges. Heck I think the guy should consider a 358 Win Or 35 Whelen.

He wants to stay around $300 and does not want a 2 stage trigger. While he makes a ton of money, Jim would be right --- no frills on a rifle. He just wants something he can go hunting with once every few years and it will sit in the corner collecting dust the rest of the time. I'd rather see him with a bolt action. When he does rifle hunt, he tends to just lay the rifle on a hay bail and wait to see where the deer enter the field at. For what he's looking for, 200-350 yard shots will be common. And the fact he's going to have the rifle laying on something as a rest, it's just easier to cycle a bolt compared to a lever. What really turned me off to a 308 is the ballistics, not so much the elevation but the wind. It has a 20-25% greater wind drift than the 7-08 and 270. I personally like the Axis, I think it's well made for the price. The 710 and Ruger American - you couldn't give me one of those. Marlin has a 2 stage trigger as does Mossberg (which I also like aside from the trigger). TC has never had a gun that didn't have a major recall on it The choices are few and far between. The local Missouri hunting board loves those Axis rifles.

7 mm 08 ammo is currently the highest priced non magum ammo and is hard to find in out of the way places. 25-06 270 30-06 308 are everywhere and usually discounted the most. 30-30 use to be the cheapest to shoot and is still good for close range deer out out to 200 yards in a good bolt gun or marlin with a scope.

I was absolutely shocked at the 7-08 price considering it's a pretty light load and the components are some of the most common.
I think any more and it will price itself right out of the market. I suspect the companies will keep that price about the same and let the cheaper rounds climb up to that level in the future.

It isn't just price it's the availibility. You are hunting in Podunk Ne. and you left your shells on the table at home, what is the local gas station likely to have?
As to the price of the rifle, the 110 isn't that much more expensive and the better trigger and smoother action will only increase his chances of bagging a deer. If this was 30 years ago I would say get a 788 and be set for life.

Any of the listed cartridges would work. Since longer shots seem to be common in his.your area, I'd go 25-06. The 25-06 is really an outstanding deer cartridge. BTW, I've shot and hunted all the cartridges listed - and own most of them. The last 2 rifles I bought for deer hunting? 25-06's. Had to buy a second one- friend of mine borrowed my first 25-06, went 4/4 on deer, all dropped on the spot. He promptly made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so, I had to buy another 25-06.

If he does not like recoil of the rounds listed the 25-06 and the 7mm-08 are the ones, 308 next.
270 and 30-06 always felt like the same gun to me. 300 win mag is just to much for non shooters.
300 yards to me the 7mm-08 is the one. If you want to shoot long range yotes with it also the 25-06 but it kick more than the 7-08 a bit and shells are as expensive if not more so. Plus the long action verse short action of the 7-08 is going to be a plus on the 7-08 in available cheap rifles.
