A local fellow brought in an old rusty single barrel shotgun that belonged to his Grandfather and wanted it put back into shoting shape. The gun was covered in rust and missing parts and I held little hope of finding any parts for the gun but told the fellow I would try. The gun was a typical break open single barrel marked Monitor on the side of the action.
So the research started... Monitor was a trade name put on either Harrington and Richardson shotguns or Cresent Arms shotguns between 1880 and 1930. This particular gun was made by Harrington and would have been sold between 1915 and 1925 as those were the years that Harrington made the guns for Paxton. The top lever and other parts were mssing from the gun and I ended up making a lot of the pars from scratch here in the sho and modifying a top lever from another old gun. I removed the rust from the gun and gave it a dura coat finish in flat black and put on a new buttplate and cleaned and oiled the stock. After honing and polishing the barrel the gun is now a shooter...but...
The interesting thing is that Paxton and Gallagher were the main hardware and grocery suppliers in Knox County ( Bloomfield, Creighton and Wausa) until they went out of business in 1958. They are best known around here for their most famous product... Paxton and Gallagher's BUTTERNUT COFFEE. The company was bought out by Swanson's foods in 1958 and was renamed The Butternut Co.
And while I was working on the gun a fellow came in and I mentioned P and G sold the gun and he said he had a bunch of old spice containers in the garage marked P and G that his grandmother bought in the 30's. So before this project is done I will have a small collection of P and G items to go with the gun.
And My mother when she moved to Omaha after WWII rememberes the smell of roasting coffee blanketing the downtown area every time they fired up the roasters.
