I'm familiar with the Ithaca SKB of that era- nice gun. I know they were made in Japan- not sure it was Miroku. The SKB's I saw had a single trigger, with a selector button at the top of the exposed part of the trigger, just below the trigger guard. If it was made in the '60's, it's not steel shot compatible. Should be a great gun for upland hunting, and waterfowl if you spring for HeviShot or something similar. If deer are on the menu, you'd probably be better served with a pump or auto with a dedicated slug barrel.

Tree rats, clays and doves would be the use.

I like it but was never a double barrel fan. I have a couple O/U for marako in japan. Nice guns and since those japs made them the price was right on them. Lots of the old timers when I started collecting would not have a japan Radio. car, tv or gun. They were still the enemy. This is my upscale shotgun dealer. Right down the road from me. I mainly get reloading stuff from them. They have your doubles from 295 to 4000 maybe more. www.indianagunclub.com/A couple of my japan brownings. A super skeet 12 guage. Both have invecta choke tubes. A clitori 20 guage. The superposed 12 went down the road it had a slight salt wood issue. It is being used as a duck/goose gun now. Your boy should be happy happy happy. Me I still prefer the old 870 for my shotgunning needs.

For tree rats, clays, and doves, that double should be an excellent choice.

Well picked up the SxS yesterday from my FFL. all looks good but i am taking it out today to test fire it to make sure it goes bang when a guy pulls the triggers. the barrels are marked full and mod and are 30". has what appears to be an ivory front bead and a brass second bead mid way up the barrel. i plan on shooting that today and my 22 lr that i just got done bedding. want to see how bad i screwed myself on both accounts. keep your fingers crossed for me, because if either or both turn out bad for me I'll never hear the end of it from a certain tramp chasing redneck!

A n O/U will do it all. The O/U I have is dead accurate with slugs in the i/c barrel and the Mod barrel is good for pheasants out to 40 yards. I shoot bismuth for ducks and it does just fine for both stalking and calling and will drop a turkey to 30 yards. If you need the chokes modified we can do it for you cheap. I/C and Mod would be my choice especialy if you wanted to shoot steel in the I/C barrel.

Well i shot it today a couple of times at the patterning board and I must say the chokes seem spot on in terms of density and POI. I only have one issue I wish to resolve on the gun. The grip cap looks like there was some sort of emblem at one time that hid the screw. I say this because I see some sort of glue stain for a lack of a better term inside a oval area. Now what I'm thinking is trying to get a emblem that would fit the are with the Eagle Scout logo on it. Or something like that. Thoughts?

Lots of possibilities. Sid Bell used to make silver birds, game, etc, of a size that was often embedded in a stock, or used for cufflinks, etc. I'm not sure if Bell is still in business, but I'm sure something like that could be found. A brass or silver plate with initials would be another possibility. Eagle Scout logo seems like a good idea to me. I'm glad to hear the gun shoots to POI- I wondered about the fit, buying a gun without trying it. Not such a big deal with a rifle, but fit is really important in a shotgun.

I am very impressed with the overall quality of this shotgun. While it is not, nor was it ever meant to be, heirloom quality in terms overall finish, it is simple but very well done even though it proudly sports the "Montgomery Wards" roll mark on the barrel. I just hope the kid ends up liking it. I'll post a picture of the grip cap and some closeups of the whole gun for you to see a bit later on.
