speaking of Turkeys, i picked up two full turkey mounts 2 weeks ago. one is a full strut mount the other is a roosted mount. the fan on the full strut mount has been chewed up a bit by a dog but i just happen to have a spare fan laying around. the cost of these mounts was two full boxes (25 rnds ea) of 9mm hollow points. ;D i couldn't pass up the deal. anyway the roosted mount is getting placed at my buddies place in his garage/barn along with all the other stuff he has hanging over his work area ;D he doesn't know it yet, i'll let him figure it out when he walks in one day. the other was going in my basement but my wife is shaking her head at me. too bad for her! the mounts are in decent shape, not pristine but good. i had to take them!

well this weekend was the youth season here in Missouri but my youngest son is camping with the scouts and i'm stuck here at work as i type. so i just may take the kid out of school on the 15th and let him hunt the regular season opener with me. that should win me a few "great dad" points with the kid. we';; head down there that Sun and roost some birds sun evening for a monday morning opener. anyway that's the plan if i can pull it off.

Our season here in Virginia starts next Saturday. I don't think I will make the opener as my son has to work and, since the place I would be hunting is semi-public land, I usually avoid hunting on opening day. That's the nice thing about being retired: I can during the week, the following week.

i've worked 14 straight days, no weekend, none less than 10 hrs with several closer to 14 hrs, i'm taking tomorrow off, yanking the youngest out of school for the day and we're gonna try to get him his first turkey. turkey or not, it'll be a great day.

Well turkeys were vocal and sounding off all morning. However they did not want to come within range. There was a coyote running back and forth between the two woodlots every time one of the Toms would sound off when on the ground. That Yote was wrecking our hunt. Later in the morning my son and I went down into this hollow where we had heard the bigger Tom (read louder) sounding off earlier. Anyway we started to do a little calling and after a few min my son says "Dad, there's a coyote looking at me" heck I never heard it sneak up, but there he was not 15 yards from us, just staring. Now in MO the yote season is closed the month of April and opens back up next week after turkey season. So I can't tell my son to shoot it. However I do believe it got scared out of there for good after today. Temps were great and we had a great time, just wish my son could have connected with a turkey. He was pumped though from the whole event this morning so that is the main thing.

I've had coyotes come to turkey calls more than once. Same here- coyote season is closed. The trappers don't like coyotes taken when the fur's not prime, so they lobby for a closed season. Inside of 40 yards, 2 ounces of #5's from a tight choke will flat deck a coyote. . . so I'm told, of course.

Nice bird. DD>
Coyote season in Indiana never closes on private land. He would have been DOA at 15 yards.
