When I was a kid my Uncle had an old Savage semi auto 22 and when I met my father in law he was shooting the same Savage. They were made from who knows when first as the Savage Model 6 and later as the model 8 and then the 87 and then cheapened up even further as the 887. My Uncle gave me his 87 back in the 70's and it has been well used since. These were the semi auto that could be used as a sbolt action also by pushing the bolt in to the action and hence they were advertised as short, long and long rifle. They actually only worked semi auto with long rifle shells and had a very slow action, bang shuchunk bang. They were a nice accurate little 22 and as long as they were kept clean they seemed to work forever but if you let them get dirty the lifters wore out and each model change had a little different lifter. Savage has always been great on NEW models so IIRR there was the ... 6, 6A-d, the 8 the 8A-G, the 87 and A-H and finally the 887 with mostly plastic parts. What brought this on was my digging mine out of the closet for a Grandson to use and thinking it wasn't such a bad gun afterall. Much like the Marlin model 60 series a good robust farm gun.

Here is the sight in target from the Model 87A I have the center group is 10 shots at 25 yards resting on a cardborad box. Good enough for the girls I go with. Attachments:
