I bought a tender barrel in it for 100 dollars 10 inch octagon. Was offered 300 at a gun show for that barrel.
They do make ammo for it now I think Aquila.

Just sold the one I had at the store. Really nice guns and wish I had one except that I don't know what I would do with it. Jack First Inc. sells the inserts to make them shoot .22;s in case someone needs any. I still see .22 Jet ammo on the shelves, I think in Winchester silver box if my memory does not deceive me and also in Remington green and yellow boxes.

The 53 is a beautiful gun. I never owned a 22 Jet. They got a reputation for having the cases back out of the chamber when fired, and locking up the gun. I can't confirm that that is true, not having owned one. Anyway, the was the reason everyone quoted as to why the Jet wasn't more successful. The 53 came with chamber inserts to fire 22 rimfire, if I remember right.

At one time H&R (NEF?) made accessory .22 Jet barrels for the old Topper break open. I got one for my .30-30 frame but then traded the whole mess off before ever shooting it. I wish now that I had kept the gun and the .22 Jet barrel.

Hmmm, I wonder. . . . Nevermind. I was thinking that maybe inserts could be made for a 22 Jet chamber, so you could use 22 Hornet ammo. Don't think so. Hornet case length is 1.403, and the Jet case is 1.2 something.

Now talk to an owner... In 1973 I bought a new 22 Jet Smith and Wesson with case and inserts. I shot it and my dad's friend Bill Sell had one of the fiirst chronographs we had ever seen so the Jet was it's first victim. In actual practice if you loaded so the shells would eject the 22 jet had very little more to offer than the 22 magnum. You had to make sure the cases and the chambers were plumb dry or the shells would back up and lock the cylinder tight. Then the inserts... they worked fine but the accuracy wasn't as good as a regular model 18. All in all I wasn't impressed witht the gun in a revolver. Now in a Contender barrel 10" long with no cylinder gap it was a whole nuther story.
Smith and Wesson missed the booat on this one in that they should have made interchangable cylinnders in 22 LR, 22 Magnum and the 22 Jet for those who liked to tinker.
