A Friend of Bounce's came in with grandpa's Remington #4 Rolling bloock rifle the other day. The action had been broken through the tang and the barrel was loose and shot out. The takedown lever had been broken and brazed together and would no longer tighten up. BUT... it was granpa's gun and he wanted to be able to shoot it SO....
First we repaired the tang. I had to remove all traces of brazing so I could clamp the action and tang in a jig and tig weld it. When it was done it only took two scrapes from a file to re fit the stock. The action was within 4 thousands of original size and shape.
Then came the barrel. I clampped it in the 4 jaw chuck and centered the rusty mess on a bore spud and got it centered and then almost ruined a drill cutting the rusty leaded mess away. The bore came out straight again within 1 thousand for the whole 20" length.
Then I took the takedown lever removed all the braze and tig welded it and reshaped the taper slightly oversize and re fitted it to the barrel.
Then a new firing pin was turned as the old one had worn down and the farmer fix was to grind on the front end removing the stop and add a piece of nail to the front of the hammer. The front sight was bent so a NOS marbles was installed and the sights were set dead center on the barrel.
Well I must have goofed somewhere... when I shot the gun to sight it in the sights were off 1/2" at 25 yards and almost an inch high. The rifle now shoots into one hole at 25 yards and still looks like gramp's rifle.
I hope the customer will be happy...
