I have a 1/2 stocked Enfield rifle with a 58 caliber smooth bore (just a tad bigger than a 28 Ga.) that I took out to pattern today. The way it looks any dove caught in that selfsame pattern will be belly up out to 30 yards or so. Now all I have to do is find a dove dumb enough to blunder into the area I am shooting at as he flies by. Sometimes this can take a 1/2 pound of shot or more. I will have to add a butt stock extender on as the gun is way too short for me as it is a 13 1/2" lop is not long enough for 34" arms. My dove load is 3/4 oz of mixed shot over 70 grains of FFg, this is also my rabbit load, my squirrel load and my turkey load. For deer I just use a round ball as I don't like picking shot out of my deer. Now if I can just get to the dove hunt Labor Day weekend!
