A Buddy bought a 40" barrel long tom shotgun from me and was bragging it would be the longest gun at the fall dove hunt. Not so Grasshopper!
I took another 36" barrel long tom and grafted on another 12" of barrel giving me a long long tom with a 48" full choke barrel and 5'-4" OAL. I was going to post a picture but I don't have anyone to hold it and if I put it on the counter I have to take pictures in sections! This reminds me of Bill's Metro Tube.

Why would one want to use a long tom for doves? I can't swing a 28 inch barrel around fast enough for them.
TWOMOONS> if I send up that cutts compensator barrel to you could you put a long tube at the end out the cutts for a metro barrel of some type. Maybe more like a card shoot gun and maybe One for geese......IDEAS..............................

It's kinda a ego thing, mines bigger than yours. Although I still have a picture of the first Dove I hit with my 44" bbl flintlock trade gun.

I wonder. . .I suspect that you'd lose velocity in a shotshell load with a 40" barrel, compared to, say, a 28". Twomoons, have you ever chronographed loads out of your long barrel?

Why would one want to use a long tom for doves? I can't swing a 28 inch barrel around fast enough for them.... I was thinking the same thing. My favorite dove guns have either a 22", 24", or 26" barrels. I never use anything longer than a 28" and that usually only for pass shooting. When they are coming in to feed, at least for me, a shorter, open-choked barrel usually does the best. And, speaking of doves, I have been seeing the heck out of them around here. I hope some of this blistering weather we have been having moderates by September. If not, the first few weeks are not going to be pleasant at all!

back in the days gone by i can remember if they landed on fence wire or in the tree branches a long tom would have been a good gun for them. Also around the grain bins.
A slow load of number 8 lead groups/patterens better if shot with a little less power for best groups. I have seen some weird barrel modification to reduce the energy from a shell in the card shoot guns. The cuts compensator works a little like that to seperate the uncuped shot into the choked area without the wad. Once you achieve max FPS the shot escapes the wad and if a wad turns slightly the shot gets thrown off track.
That is one of the reasons that guns like the old red label model 37 in full choke seems to pattern very well even without tubes or extra lenght barrels. The highly polished barrels seem to be cut truer and polished enough that the wad does not go a bit sideways in the barrel tossing the shot cup pattern around.

Most modern powders will max out for velocity between 16 and 18" of barrrel and magnum loads will be your 24" but I will be shoooting BLACK powder so my loads won't max out till I get to 32" and the other foot or so of barrel is so I can see the bead sight if I rest the gun butt on my foot! Mick has the 40" long tom and I am going to tease him a tad.
