I have a Bennelli Nova. I have missed a couple turkeys over the last few years. I have a buddy that has been pushing me to get a 10 gauge. He uses a custom shell from Nitro Ammunition. www.nitrocompany.com/Well, I got with them a couple months ago and got their recommendation for a new choke tube to use with their ammo. They recommended an Indian Creek in .665" for the Nova. We talked about it, and I ordered 5 Mega-Weight 3 1/2", 2 1/4 oz loads. Mega-Weight is heavier than Hevi-Shot. What I got was a mixed load of 4,5,6,7 with a buffer. I tested it this weekend... I shot 2 shots and had 176, and 196 pellets in a 9" pie plate at 40 yards. And they had enough energy to penetrate thru a 1/2 sheet of CDX plywood used as a backstop. If I miss a turkey next year... I can't blame it on the gun. Jabba

Interesting website. That's terrific performance, Jabba. Let us know how it works, come turkey season.

if you don't already have them i would put a set of open sites on that gun! i too have a indian creek choke on my beretta and it shoots well. i do like the idea of a mix load as they tend to pattern well in most guns but until i use up all my #5's i ain't buying any more ammo. good luck and hope it smacks em in the face next spring.

Better keep the shots over 40 yards or they'll hear the nova rattle (evil grin) ;D ;D ;D
Like JimH said, a rifle sight really lets you dial it in.

JimH and PBR have a good point. When your turkey gun shoots a tight pattern, you're really doing more like rifle shooting than shotgun shooting, and centering your pattern on the target becomes critical. You may find, too, that your gun doesn't shoot exactly where you want it to. That's easy to fix with an adjustable sight, iron, scope, Red Dot, whatever you like. I have a red dot type sight on my turkey gun, and that's worked well for me.

I'll never use a scope again for turkey because the eye relief gets all messed up depending if you're standing, sitting up straight, sitting low after slowly sliding down during the course of an hour long wait. You just can't adjust yourself like you can deer hunting.

PBR, that's a good reason to try some of the other optical sights available. Red dot sights have infinite eye relief, and so do the holographic types on the market.

Red they do make scope with forgiving eye relief. They just don't sell them in the clear plastic packages at mega-low-mart.
I have a shotgun somewhat like a turkey gun. I use it for coyotes early in the season and at night, 2 3/4 inch #4 buck, 2 3/4 #4 buck, 3 inch #2 lead, 3 inch #2 lead, and a 3 in 00 buck ll is what i load up with. It groups well with the #4 and the lead #2 and is shocked down to .658 and is 30 inches long. The 2 3/4 inch #4 buck said on the boxes 1250 FPS and it feels like it is that fast. The 3 inch #4 mag buckshot recoil fells about the same but velocity say 1000 FPS on the box. I think the 3 inch has the same amount of powder but more buckshots in the load.
The scope is a nikon slughunter 1-4 X 36 . 5 to 5.5 inches of eye relief and some weird BDC retical for slugs. I bought it with a slug guns sold off the slug gun and kept the scope I think I got 50 bucks in it now. Nice little scope but it is 11 inches long so it is a bit big.
I would like to see more of what this company does in person. Sounds like they get to do full time what I have been playing around with at still board shoots for years.
The plated #4 buckshot give a nice even pattern to 50 yards. 3 to 5 in a coyote at 50 I think the load is 30 pellets but 3 seems to be enough to Bring them down after a long run away.

yep, that 18" dia pattern at 40 yrds is about the size of a soft ball at 25 yrds. real easy to miss a turkey head if the gun is not shooting true to line of site. after i pattern any new gun of mine at 40 i shoot a pattern at 20 too.

I will. The pattern center is a TOUCH low @ 40 yards. maybe 4" or so. I don't have rifle sights but I do have a double bead.
I watched a Tom service 5 hens this spring and managed to sneak up from 80 yards to 50 yards or so... before 4 deer wandered into the game and I had to shit or get off the pot. I just knew there was a better tool than what I had. Hopefully I found it.
