Those weird indiana deer legal calibers are starting to pop up. This one is a 358 winchester cut down to 1.8 inches on the brass. It uses 308 cases so most likely better to catch on than my thought of the 35 rem short. The 357 max is/was a great option until they opened up the round from 1.6 inches. Now if you are going to handload you can use the 308 case and not have to mess with finding 357 max brass and you do get a bit of a jump in FPS at 2525. about 500 fps more or less without going max loads in the MAX. www.guns.com/a-deer-cartridge-just-for-one-state-the-358-hoosier.htmlI know we have a didicated 358 win fan here. I am not ready to give up my 44 mag rifle for one of these as my shots are close. I will use my 7-30 waters for long shots. I do know of a few people that use 270 and 30-06 pistols in Indiana for deer hunting. I just do not need all that muzzleblast out of a 15 inch barreled pistol for deer. Heck my 35 rem splashed a 3 to 4 foot flame out of the barrle at dusk.

Interesting cartridge. I don't see it getting much interest outside of Indiana, but that's OK.

Yes we have weird laws here in Indiana to hunt deer. Want to use a 300 win mag fine. As long as it is a 300 win mag pistol. What to use a 410 shotgun with slugs that is fine, Want to use a 30-30 sorry to powerfull. yet you can stuff 4 pirodex pellets in a smoke pole if you like. and a 2.50 a shot sabot 20 or 12 guage is fine also. You want to use an AR to hunt deer fine just get one in 450 bushmaster or or 450 socom. Want to use you old 45-70 with standard cowboy loads and that is a no-no. oh well at least we have good hunting here.
Since the rule changed try to get 357 max brass..most of it ended up in indiana from the last 3 years of runs form remington...... i did find 20 rem brass for 10 dollars from a realoading friend. At the shows the once fired (Surely many fired) was a dollar a piece.... a box of 357 max factroy ammo 50 dollars a box, make a encore barrel and 308 brass with the Speer SSP bullet in 180 grain a good idea since the 357 max brass is all being horded up around here.....
My friend with a 20 inch mgm contender barrel gets nearly 35 rem proformance with lil gun and the speer ssp in a 357 max. He can get a 6 inch plate at 300 yards pretty easy.
Starline does not even have 357 max brass,
The 358 hoosier is just that a cartridge for one state. The Hoosier state.
