I'm not much of a lover of the Taurus Judge but a lot of people like them. Their just too big and bulky. Don't know about this one yet as I haven't looked at one up close. We have a huge number of rock hunters and gold prospectors out here along with lots of rattle snakes. So we sell the hell out of the Taurus gun. We had a number of them come back as the owners said they had no range. DUH hell no, not at 30 feet but at 5 feet they do just fine. So does a .357 Mag with shot loads. So I am not really sure the need for a gun that weighs a bunch and is bulky as all hell is that important. Buy a 2 1/2' .44 Mag and it will do the same thing and weigh a bit less.

I'm not surprised to see S&W come out with this, given how well Taurus is doing with their Judge. They did do something smart- making it capable of taking 45 ACP as well as 45 Colt. 45 ACP ammo is about as common as dirt, and available in a lot of different loads. Not something I would buy. I do see utility in shot loads in revolvers, for snakes, etc- not for home defense. I've found a Charter Arms Bulldog is a fine shot thrower. Like Bill said- at close range. I get good patterns at 10 feet.

For home defense I like a 410 with the old 3 buckshot load: but out of a pistol grip shotgun not a handgun. Also make one heck or a tractor/combine/truck gun as my feeling on mossburgs are they are best in ugly roles where they can get beat up.
I did see that tarus had a 28 guage judge at the shot show but I think the ATF gave it a no go for import. Now a 28 guage in a handgun even if 3 or 4 shot would have been something fun to shoot. I can see handgun bunnies with a shotgun pistol just for the heck of it. A friend of mine has the winchester 9410 shotgun but on the 94 action and likes to freak people out using it on birds.
It is funny the rossi/tarus started in Brasil making smith and wesson revolvers using the replaced machines from smith. Now Smith is chasing tarus/rossi and inventing or coping there best selling pistols.
My Interarms Rossi's are good guns. For a while after I got mine in the 1980's they had a bit of QC issues and some timing problems. But mine are still going strong after 20 years and unknown round count. The 357 is my EDC weapon (Model 66 copy for you old time LEO's) and even though I don;t yet reload for it or shot it much Its bigger brother the 44 special is just as nice. The 38 has been trade off and bought back several times but now it seems it has found a perminate home in a friends truck glove box. The only taurus I kinda like at this moment is the Raging hornet in 8 inch barrel. Each time I see on I get a little twitch in my wallet.
I think the price point on the smith is to high to make a splash in the market. I seems the gang banger types like the Judge as that is who I always see looking at them in the gun shops I frequent in harder core neighborhoods in INDY. They must sell lots of them cause they carry like 3 or 4 stlyes of them in stock. I don't think the 200 extra for shoot 45 acp is going to get them to spend the extra.

If you can't shoot a handgun this is the gun for you. If Taurus can sell them Smith had to jump on the band wagon too. I was not impressed with the Taurus and see nothing more in the Smith, a combination of a poor patterning shotgun and a poor grouping revolver.

To me either the Taurus or the Smith is a solution looking for a problem. However, as you said, they seem to sell around here like crazy too.
