So I've got that Remington 742 and I was going to put a scope on it this spring. I had been leaning towards a Bushnell Elite 3200 and would have definatly bought it had they been gloss.
Well I just bought (prob be a week or so before getting it) a used glossy Leupold. It's the 100th aniverssary scope from 2007. 2x7x33 duplex. The guy said it's in near perfect condition.
I'm getting that $155 to the door.

gee red, that scopes sounds familiar. I think I know where you bought it. that is a fair price for a VX-I and what they should sell for IMHO. throw out the 100 yr anniversary thing, it don't mean squat. the VX-I series is optically the same as the older Vari-X II series. most VX-I's run right around 200.00 - 250.00 depending on where you shop but They where running sales on them during the holidays for under 200.00 but I can't recall if they got as low as 150.00 so you did well.

That is a perfect setup for your 742. Now since it is your take the see through scopes rings off and mount it low as possible to the barrel. I don't think you can go to low. There are ultra low rings but at 33 mm i think you can go low on the warnes. Leopold has the caluclations on there web site,

I think I have no choice but to keep the Leupold base on the gun.
Either Remington drilled the holes slightly off or the prevouis owner buggered them up. Either way, I can't get the Weaver bases on. The Leupold (which he had on there) will screw all the way down with some work.

Uh run a tap in first you shouldn't need to WORK to screw in 6x48 screws. That should make you a primoo deer hunting outfit and the 2x7 is plenty enough scope for 250 yard deer and coyotes. I rearely shoot my variables over 7x anyway even for way out there dogs.

Well I got it today. Cosmetically, it looks brand new (which I honestly did not expect). It does appear to have been used as the adjustments have been dinged up by a screwdriver a little bit (as would be expected with normal use). Overall, very happy with that purchase. I'm going to have to look for a 1 piece weaver rail with multiple mounting options and hope it screws down ok. The scope needs to come back another 2". If I went out hunting in a winter coat, there would be no way I shoot that gun as it is. I think I'm going with this www.midwayusa.com/product/531734/weaver-top-mount-scope-base-62-glossRegardless if I go with a see-thru or not (I don't think that's an option anymore with the weaver rail), the rings need to be medium/high. The ones I have now would work if the mount would, but the scope does need to be a little higher since I'm starting from scratch anyway.
