The base I have on the rifle is a one piece base that TAKES Weaver rings. As to the Weaver 4x4 rings I have found them plenty strong enough for anything I need but if I go to a 30mm tube I will have to upgrade. I am currently looking at a 4x16 Leupold just because of the sharper optics as my eyes get worse the better optics are necessary.
I tried a mil dot I had in the shop and you are right the dot's are as big as a dog at 200+ yards. They might be OK for coyotes but would be hard for smaller varmits for sure.
I got the stock in yesterday and will be putting in the pillar bedding today and should have the rifle glasses in at Christmas time. I am using a new bedding compound made for target rifles that is suppose to damp vibration more than acra glass, we'll see.

With a good lap job the weavers will be fine.
Leupold has the custom shop and since they basically have a min amount they let people sell them for the custom shop route is a great idea. get the rectical you want. The taget dot. the fine x hair. a german #4. ect.

Twomoons, I would be interested to hear how the bedding compound works for you, and what it is. Vibration dampening bedding compound sounds a lot like what Winchester was doing several years ago, with that semi soft blob of bedding compound they put in Model 70 stocks.
