Was at the tipton gun show. One the rack next to a model 39a was a K prefix marlin mountie from 1953. I did not even notice the straight stock no pistol grip. Dad did. As i was putting it back dad asked if that was a mountie. I looked and saw the straight grip.
I grabbed the blackberry and pulled up my marlin notes. Found out it was a first year mountie with 24 inch barrel. Asking price was 399. Got dad handed him 200 and said lets go half but see if we can get it for 300.
As dad looked it over (It was not perfect but in good shape with a few metal scratches on the barrel and tube but nice wood. He placed it in the rack and asked what do you have to have for the marlin. The dealer said well it is now sold. A guy had bought it while dad was looking at it. 380 was the price paid.
Sometimes when you get a chance to get a rare one (only 4,335 made in 1953) someone comes and buys it while it is in your hands is a little depressing. Bummed out the rest of the gun show. The other dealer who bought it out from under us later told me if I wanted any of his guns on the table he would knock off 25 dollars on one for us. I told him i would pay him 405 for the marlin and he just smiled and said it was giong into his safe.
For those intrested in browning model 52c copies of the winchester model 52 there were 2 of them at the show. no box one with scope one without 600-695 dollars. I never see these for sale and to have two at one small show was remarkable.
A marlin model 99-m1 for 220. and a savage in 300 savage for 500. Noting great i had to have but i regret not just buying the marlin on first sight and looking up the details later.
I drooled over a rem model 40X with all accesories for 900. I was only 700 dollar short of getting that one. Offhand palm rest for standing, redfield olimpic sights and some great looking walnut on the stock. barrel and action blus near perfect. I like those 40X's but my rusty kimber 82g will have to do for now.
